The sad thing is, if he does come back next year and is a monster, Gator fans will cheer him and brag about the success to which he contributes. Including me. I'll forget about it, too.

I think the Fulmer Cup should be awarded in conjunction with the Meyer Trophy. The Meyer Trophy going to the college football player who commmits the biggest infraction and receives the lightest punishment.

How many Vol fans wished Fulmer had given James Banks "one more chance".

Assuming you are a "lawgator" (and incidentally, I know a couple of pretty sharp attorneys that went to UF law school), then you know that we live in a society where "nothing is anyone's fault, and everything is somebody's fault". Sad to say, but true.

But, subscribing to the "higher standard" theory, which I believe applies (or should) in this case...arrest = suspension until adjudicated, and conviction = dismissal, for anything beyond what would be considered a petty offense.

Then again, if we did that, Vandy would be probably be looking forward to a BCS bowl.

Another thing to think about here too is the fact that we don't know this kid.......AT ALL. Coaches, generally, try to help these kids out. A lot, NOT ALL, of them come from, lets say, less than ideal homes/living situations. I know we have all seen, time and time again a really talented guy throw his career away due to some bad decisions. Just a thought.

I respect that and can see why you'd give a second chance ot a kid with a minimal amount of pot. I just can't see giving a guy who fires a gun in anger a second chance. He's too far gone, IMO.

same here, law. the gun thing is definitely a "dismissable" (is that a word? lol) offense, IMO as well. the bigger picture, to me, is that it is really kinda sad that we even have to have these types of discussions. how many of us would love to have the gifts those guys have and be able to play for a UT or uf?
i get so pissed off thinking about guys around here who "shoulda, coulda, woulda"........athletes I know personally who either have never been steered in the right directions or just make bonehead decisions and never get a chance to show their stuff.

There is really too much liability involved in giving a guy who fires a gun a second chance. Regardless of the circumstances if he ends up shooting someone that could literally kill the program. Yes the odds are against it, but it is simply a risk that is not worth the reward.

If it was really only .8 GRAMS, then I think a one game suspension is fair. But on the other hand, that just means he smoked the rest of it before he got caught...

pot is illegal - so really it doesn't make a difference for me... 2-4 game suspension in my opinion but I'm more stiff when it comes to that I guess..

Just because tons of people smoke it doesn't mean it should be regarded lightly :dunno:

Dont forget about the guy that failed the drug test prior to the Tennessee Florida game last yr that wasn't suspended until the monday after the game. I cant remember the guys name, but he was on defense and absolutely handled us. It came out that he had failed his like 3rd drug test the week before the game and wasn't suspended until the monday after our loss.

You've missed about 1,000 posts debating these issues. To sum up from a Gator fan's perspective:

1) Marcus Thomas is a non-issue. He failed two tests and was suspended but utilized a university appeal system to create doubt aobut the second positive. As a consequence, he was placed on probation. And the moment he violated the smallest condition -- a Tuesday counseling meeting -- he was booted from the team.

2) Brandon James was caught with a tiny personal use amount of pot and was suspended for the season opener. Appropriate.

3) I agree with those who oppose allowing Wilson even a chance at coming back to the team. He fired a gun in anger. There should be no second chance for such behavior and I am disappointed in Meyer for giving him that second chance.
