OL candidates

As a veteran of 2 or 3 different doc appts this month, I hope you're good. And Elarbee is still with us.

Who doesn't like a good "vultures circling" coaching discussion before game 4? Feels like old times, eh?
All is good. Certain ages you are hitting docs almost weekly.

Oh yeah. Anytime you lose a game, it’s time to start looking for a coach

GOOD GOSH- fulmer's not busy bring him in as an consultant for 3-4 weeks. Poppa Plump ALWAYS had good O Lines, he just could not outcoach the ole ball sack Spurrier or Satan !
No, he's too divisive. And the UT needs good and new ideas, old school doesn't work too well now.

People said that about Banks too. I think if there's not a huge improvement by the end of the season and it's obvious there needs to be a change, then CJH is going to make a change, because the current product just is not acceptable.
Maybe.

But Banks was other side of the ball.

And Elarbee is important to O scheme and planning.

Been with him since 2016.

But, bad enough you make moves

@Volanta , you forgot an empty rocking chair. I’m sure the empty chair could possibly be a better OL coach for a salary of $0 annually.

He started the purgatory when he became a lazy ass coach. He accelerated the purgatory when he became AD. Just think what machinations he could work as oline coach. I bet he could put a damn sinkhole in Neyland that would drain the Tennessee River.

I know Elarbee and Josh are close, but Josh is a competitor. Dude wants to win. And he sure seems to love being the HC here. If this O line is anywhere near this bad by season's end, I can't see him keeping Elarbee.

A lot of people said he wouldn't make wholesale changes on defense and he did. We'll see how it plays out.

ok did a quick google on top Oline candidates----bc something has to give:

Matt Luke (Clemson): Former SEC head coach and national champion with Georgia who is arguably the standard for elite SEC recruiting and development. How has Clemson's line looked this year? I am not sure.

Kyle Flood (Texas)
: Mastermind behind the massive, physical front at Texas who carries huge weight on the recruiting trail.....dont want this guy bc we sacked his QB 6 times Saturday.

Alex Mirabal (Miami)
: A tough pull away from Cristobal, but he is easily one of the most relentless five-star recruiters in the country. I like this guy. Miami has brought in hot shot NIL QBs and they all have had time to throw.

Phil Trautwein (Florida
): Moves guys to the NFL Draft at a high clip and is known for producing disciplined, technically precise units. Not gonna lie never heard of him.

Jim Harding (Michigan)
: A true developmental genius who consistently turns three-star guys into Joe Moore Award caliber lines. I like this guy too, we need someone who can DEVELOP!!!!!

Joe Rudolph (Notre Dame)
: Builds incredibly deep, blue-collar run-blocking lines that would bring serious physicality to Knoxville.

A'lique Terry (Oregon): A young high energy recruiter whose modern spread experience fits Heupel’s system perfectly.
Did we lose our OLINE COACH?

None of those in the original post are coming here. Maybe Luke if Clemson goes down the toilet. Key might be an option if Ga Tech moves on from him. It’s Elarbee though until end of season and I think we really have to go off the rails the rest of the season for Heupel to admit we have a problem. Best we can probably hope for is for another analyst that can evaluate and recruit will come in and get things sorted.

If I had to predict Elarbee will be who costs Heupel his job in the end. Maybe we add a ton of talent inside via the portal though.

This is my guess as well. I get the feeling he’d rather fail with his boy than succeed without him. Sucks for us but as a man he’s probably better off going that route.

Stop torturing yourself. Nothing will happen this year.

Items to consider:
1) The NCAA has removed the limit on the number of coaches a school can have, but the off campus recruiting limit remains at 11.
2) Glen Ellarbee is not only one of Heupel's best friends, but is integral in the offensive philosophy, game-planning, and evolution. Firing Ellarbee would mean firing his friend, but also firing a guy who is embedded in this offensive system and development. It's just not likely to happen.

With that as background, I would like to see the following:

-Make Glen Ellarbee the run game coordinator. And given that he isn't a great on-the-road recruiter, remove that duty from him. He continues to be a part of Josh's trusted inner circle when it comes to philosophy and game-planning, but is removed from the OL Coach duties.
-Hire Geep Wade as the OL coach. Give him Ellarbee's off-campus recruiting duties. Geep was the OL Coach at Georgia Tech the last few years under Buster Faulkner, when they had some fantastic Olines. He's now in his first year at Nebraska. Tech has seen a significant drop off on the OLine this year with Wade's departure. That says a lot. Wade also helped recruit and sign Josh Petty. Further, Wade is a BGA grad from Franklin, TN and I happened to know him at BGA...he grew up a Vol fan. He'd be a great addition to the staff.

I think this is a great way to solve the Oline problem.

And it’s not just about getting coached up.

The average fan thinks if you throw a coach at a problem then that fixes everything.
In the case of Jim Knowles and the defense- YES. Because he was allowed to do whatever he needed to do. So far so good!

But there is a problem with the Ellerbe, Sims, Pope, Halzle coaching tree. It’s HEUPEL.
There a reason he made zero changes on “his” offense. And changed everything else. It’s the one thing that he feels is the identity of Tennessee football. And that’s his mistake.
HEUPEL did not protect- Faizon, Sanders, Ellerbe, The TENNESSEE VOLS, against Texas where he could. He obviously can’t play for them. But if a defense has their ears pinned back…why call slow developing pass plays?????? The oline was struggling- so call slants! Draws. Mix it up! Something to make them hesitant and allow the oline to get their feet under them. Nope- he continued with the same crap and we lost to an undisciplined, but talented Texas team. Texas did not play well. But Heupel wasn’t good enough to make them pay for it.

So we will beat Auburn. Arkansas because they’re not good teams.

Heupel needed to hire an OC.
But he’s too damn stubborn…
