...but you can't tell me the Don Mahoney still deserves to be here. The technique of this OL is really really bad. They don't use their hands well, they have bad leverage, whether it's in pass pro or failing to get to the play side on reach blocks(which are critical, CRITICAL, in the zone blocking scheme that we use) the combo blocking is not cohesive, and experienced guys are missing routine assignments. And this is just from the first half.

This unit NEEDS to be solid if we are ever going to make use of out playmakers on offense. And it's why I think a QB change alone isn't going to solve anything. Personally I think the scheme is the genesis of our issues but without execution on the line you aren't getting much done in any scheme.

Seemed like the line was fine last year.

I think everyone just got surprised on Thursday. App State showed up to play. Let's reserve judgement when we have a bigger sample size.

I'm waiting to see how they look Saturday. They played pretty well the second half of last season. I'm not sure how or why they'd regress so much

It's never been consistent under Mahoney. Every week it's a question mark as to whether the oline is going to come out prepared or not.

DeBord works closely with Mahoney on the OL. CBJ has said that working with OLinemen is one of DeBord's specialties.

Did he not turn down Pittman?

Don't remind me. Pittman and Chaney would be a welcome sight on the sidelines for the last two seasons.

Can't say that I always agree with the OP, but I'd be lying if I said I was thrilled when we announced that Dooley's replacement was the guy on the other sideline for his "signature win."

I'll caveat that by saying that I hope like crazy to be able to come back here and eat my words when we win the SEC, but I'm just not convinced.

Since the ND-TX game just concluded, I'd like to know where all those Charlie Strong haters are? In addition, did you see any similarities in our team and the Texas team? I doubt it. First, how many conservative plays did you see TX make--not many? You also saw two QBs playing for both Notre Dame & Texas utilizing the talents of both. For the most part, both teams looked like well-oiled machines.
A pronounced improvement from last year's TX team which got whacked by Notre Dame. I hate to say it but I don't see the Vols anywhere close to either of those teams, at least not at this point. I sure hope we can display what the VOLS CAN do in the Battle of Bristol. We need a fast start and momentum going forward and play to win, not lose. If we keep Dobbs in the pocket all game it is not going to bode well for us. Just saying....

The Debord hire isn't far behind (or at all perhaps)

The Debord hire will never make sense considering he hadn't been coaching in college football for a couple of years, and he was fired for poor performing teams in his last stops.

Maybe the most important part of HC job is getting the correct assistants in place, and that one looked more like giving an old friend a job than it did getting the best coach for the offense.

We'll see as the season goes along, but I don't know how Debord and Mahoney survive this year if we don't see better preparation and utilization of talent over the rest of the season.

I like Charlie a lot, but they definitely took the foot off the gas after going up 31-14. They got ultra conservative and it almost cost them the game.

It was more than a couple of years. His last job in college was in 2007 at Michigan.

Yeah, reminded me of the Oklahoma game last year. Tried to just hold the lead instead of extend it, ND almost made them pay for it in the end.

Yeah but he was coaching in the NFL until 2012. I'll give him that at least, but no one was looking to pick him up when he left the Bears, and that says a lot about his stock as a coach.

I know, thats hilarious. And ironically, Sam Pittman doesn't need any help being the best OL coach in the universe.

Well, they were trying to keep the running game going and the Notre Dame defense stiffened pretty good. Overall I thought both teams did a really good job, mixing up plays and driving the ball downfield. I sure hope our team can hang with teams like those; they looked pretty good to me. Right now I'm more concerned with our offense than the defense. If we don't have a decent down-field passing threat opponents are going to stack the box on us and 3 & outs are going to be common. I sure hope my pessimism about that is unfounded.

I'm not beating my chest and I'm an ALL VOLS fan first & forever. Secondly ppl have been criticizing Strong for being weak at TX. First, he had to get rid of a lot of players & clean house, next he had to get and upgrade his recruits (kinda sounds like brink-by-brink doesn't it), and now it looks like they have turned the corner. Conversely everyone thinks we have or should have turned the corner i.e. SEC East favorites. We sure looked like favorites Thursday didn't we? Fact is we LUCKED out. So get off your high horse. If you can't tell the difference between how Notre Dame & Texas played tonight and how TN played Thursday night I don't think I'd be criticizing anyone else. Hmmm, what top 10 team have we beaten lately? Surely you didn't consider Northwestern a top 10 team?

Maybe here is something else to consider -

Listening to some of the Tennessee beat writers analyze that narrowest of wins brought some interesting things to light. Mike Griffith and Jesse Simonton of SEC Country said there have been questions all preseason about Tennessee’s attitude — a sense that having the talent to win the national championship is enough on its own to blow out Appalachian State in the home opener. According to those writers, Vols coach Butch Jones has given some of his players the freedom to take days off from practice if they think they need the rest. Based on their performance, it looked like they took more than one.
