I sat and watched our defense to really try and figure them out. This is what I came up with.
1. Our LB's are without a doubt our weakest link on the D. I know some are yelling that the dline is but trust me it's not. The dline is the easiest spot on the field to replace and with the talent we have and time it will get better as evidenced this past Saturday. They are by no means world beaters but they were better and played on the other side of the line all night (we don't have that bulldozer but very serviceable). On to the LB's. McCoy and Mayo are big, fast and strong but seem to find themselves out of position a lot, particularly on the short passing routes. Many times a 4 yard pass was 15 before we got to it (thank God for fast alert DB's). What can I say about Karl other than fundamentally he is sound but he is as fast right now as he will ever be. McCoy and Mayo can get better but Karl will never be faster. The UF OSU game kept coming to mind as I watched this game. If he can get to the play he makes it. The problem is he can't get there nearly fast enough.

Against the turds Mayo and McCoy will need to play better and make sure they are disciplined and cover the short passes or we will be in trouble. I really like the athleticism in our DB's. The Dline will be able to put some pressure on Timmy but our LB's better be ready for the short routes, the keeper and miss directions. If they do we will stand a very good shot at this game.

McCoy hits bigger than he looks, how big is he?

6'1" 215 is not little for a UT LB under Chavis. He is no Al Wilson but bigger than a lot of LB's we have had under Chavis. We have taken several Db's and made them LB's in the past. However if you percieve him as not big then ok I see your point. The rest is true.

FYI our lb's are

Mayo 6'2" 230
McCoy 6'1" 215
Karl 6'0" 218

Pretty typical UT LB's except for Karl's lack of speed.

I think having Karl in the starting lineup proves your point...beef.

I would agree with that acessment, and I thought that we were solid at lb.

The LB's did better in the 2nd half to an extent. But they blew way to many short route coverages in the first half and a few in the 2nd. If the LB's play well and are disciplined we will be in this game. The LB's are the crucial point of the game right now. 2nd would be kick off coverage and punt coverage. If we can be better in those areas and play like we did the rest of the areas we can play with the turds and anyone else in the league.

I still want to see Myers-White get more time in Karls spot to see what he can do.

The question there is how is he mentally? It is a double edge sword. Karl is a smart LB and knows the game but slow. MW is faster but if he is out of position then it is worse IMO than a slower smarter player.

i thought Rico McCoy was night and day between the two halves....good stuff Beef. I agree...the D line had a much better effort Saturday night. and Mayo and McCoy and Karl, to a lesser extent, all played better in the 2nd...hope it translates in to something Saturday afternoon......

I know, but I haven't heard anything about him having trouble with the D and he played well in the scrimmages. He should have the D down by now, isn't he a RS Soph?

The only thing Chavis has ever said bad about Rico is sometimes he freelances too much. That is a double edged sword because if he reads a play correctly and gets out of position to make a play he's a linebacker with great instincts. If he gets burnt he's inadequate.

Well then he should have the schemes down. I would just like to see what he can do. It would add some much needed athleticism to the front 7.

Knowing the schemes and getting yourself in position once the ball is snapped are 2 different things. I would guess that if he was doing so he would be there instead of Karl. Chavis has a pretty good track record on LB's.

I don't care what Chavis has said. I watched him against Cal and USM and he missed a lot of coverages that LB's are supposed to take.

Besides ST, LB has been the most disappointing unit thus far. They should turn it around. Ryan Karl could be a big liability this weekend.

Yep. I expect to see a package with 3 safeties a lot with Mayo and McCoy on the field and UT to use McKenzie almost like a 3rd LB.

I mean, McKenzie's big drawback is he isn't very good in coverage correct? He's faster than Karl. He's a big hitter. Let him play run first with Hefney and Parrish back there. Maybe I'm being too creative.

I understand what you are saying but that would leave a lot of realestate open and we would need a HUGE pass rush to make that work.

Concerning Karl, having a field level advantage the other night at the game, Karl plays with a lot of heart and did make a few good hits but concerning speed, I think everyone else, the linebackers and the d-backs, have to overplay sometimes in order to offset Karl's lack of speed.I know he tries really hard but it will be exposed as we go forward as the teams we play will be better and quicker than what we have faced up to this point.

I would sub in a faster lb for Karl on 3rd and long.
