Oh Dear Lord! Bees!

Didn't click on it, but isn't that link like seven years old? Welcome to the interwebs. Classic, though, I'll give you that.

Feel bad for the bees... While bees can co-exist with a neighborhood of kids despite what that guy thought, obviously they can't co-exist all on the same playground set. Too bad.

My uncle is a bee keeper. If the bees are not Africanized, they can be worked with and are mostly harmless. I suppose if I were deathly allergic to bees I might be worried about freak occurrences too, though.

I think I am a bee sympathizer. Not as many bees as there used to be...

As a former bee-keeper I have to say that was all unnecessary. Many bee-keepers will come capture a swarm for free, just to have the colony.

Bees swarm when the hive becomes too crowded or when the queen starts becoming less productive. The workers will form a queen cell and leave when the new queen is mature. They will form a "ball" to await discovering a suitable home by roaming workers. The secret to capturing a swarm is locating the queen and the swarm will go where ever she goes. I've had swarms take over empty hives which was a nice surprise, bee-keeping wise. Bees are at their most docile when swarming. I once saw a swarm collect on the front fender of a neighbor's car.

How do you go about locating the queen in a swarm? (I'm not planning to try this out cowboy-style at home, I am just curious)

My dad raised bees when I was young. He kept them in the back yard. I have a lot of memories about getting stung. (Dribbling a basketball in their vicinity pisses them of, BTW)

There is nothing like fresh honey. My dad would keep the comb in some. Good times.

I grew up working with these things. My grandfather raised kept them for the honey and the gardens. He was probably unique in that he never got stung or that he would never admit to it if he did. Me I used a head cage and wrapped everything in burlap and still got nailed again and again. Talk about facing your fears early in life.

It can be difficult when swarming. I watched a guy do it this way. He laid a bed sheet under the swarm and reached into the swarm (gloves on) and basically got lucky in pulling out the center bees which included the queen. She is much larger than the other bees, so when he had her down on the sheet, the rest of the swarm recollected on the sheet, and he rolled them up in it.

This little encounter could have so easily ended up as a strong contender for the Darwin Awards.

OK....so it's really slow at the office (hopefully, thanks to Spring Break and not a sudden shift in opinion of my medical prowess) and I decided to surf around the website linked in the OP.

This thread had me in tears, but don't read it right after eating:

Red Snapper ~~MOD CHALLENGE ITT~~ - The Something Awful Forums

When I first read the OP I thought it was a bad attempt at a sexual inuendo. After the recipe post I could see where that was going. It reminded me of VolDad's "we need to hold Kiffin accountable" thread last fall.

Good stuff. Thanks

Reminds me of when my grandfather taught me how to get rid of an ant hill. Gas + matches = carnage
