Officiating in the UT vs Akron game

I was kinda baffled on a kickoff. The return guy obviously stepped into the field of play, retreated to the end zone and was given the ball on the 25. I called it the Gimme 3 steps rule, a nod to Skynyrd. Those more informed could probably explain why that was allowed. I thought after you step out of the end zone into the field of play you had to live with your decision.
The fact that the ball never broke the plane of the end zone is the deciding factor on that, I do believe.

Thanks, all I saw was his foot past the goal line. Also didn't agree with the PF on Beasley. QB was running his mouth, AB got back in his face. Game was getting pretty chippy at one point in the 3rd culmination in the Calloway smackdown. I've heard it said they flag the 2nd guy, Calloway took 2nd thru 6th place on that one. I wasn't looking, and they for sure didn't show it on the Jumbotron, Saw it after I got home, Reminded me of a scene from the movie the Replacements.

Some may know better than me but I think it has to do with where the ball is. They may have ruled it never crossed into the field of play

Seems to be the popular answer. I haven't seen a replay, the Jumbotron didn't spend much time on it. I think we are in full avoid the mustard bottle mode these days at games. Thanks for the explanation.
