The fact that the ball never broke the plane of the end zone is the deciding factor on that, I do believe.I was kinda baffled on a kickoff. The return guy obviously stepped into the field of play, retreated to the end zone and was given the ball on the 25. I called it the Gimme 3 steps rule, a nod to Skynyrd. Those more informed could probably explain why that was allowed. I thought after you step out of the end zone into the field of play you had to live with your decision.
