'25 Official pregame/game thread ‘25 Music City Bowl vs Illinois

So when do hear about defensive coaches? I’m ready to move the F on from this season and have something else to talk and read about. Seems like we need to move pretty fast considering the portal opens up this weekend. Do we really go into the portal not know who our position coaches are?

RG doesn't call the defense. If they tell him to rush three, he rushes 3. If they tell him to stunt, they stunt. If they tell him to zone blitz and drop a 270# dl to cover the slot reciever, he does that. RG hasn't forgot how to coach technique. I do think he was limited on personnel this year. They need to spend some money on the defense.
I'm aware he doesn't call plays. I do believe most is scheme which hopefully gets corrected going forward but gap integrity and contain were woefully bad this year. We all just witnessed it again. That's in the technique department. I'm an RG fan but not opposed to a new voice either. In agreement on the spending. They need to bring in no less than 7 starter and depth level transfers. Multiple at every level imo

This is why we once need patience once again and why I don’t think Heupel needs to be on the hot seat next year, maybe warm. Yes it’s on him that he kept Banks around so long. The offseason should show us what kinda coach he really is.
I think Heupel has relied on scheme or having more talent than the teams he has beat. I don't know of too many games we've won under him where Tennessee looked like the more disciplined and better coached team. With the margins between all the teams getting tighter, playing smart and with discipline is going to be the difference between playing in the CFP and playing in a lower tier bowl game. I think that's the biggest thing missing from Heupel's program. The talent has been improving, the offense is evolving, and he just hired a top DC. We need good fundamentals and discipline as a team or we'll just keep treading water as a program that wins enough to be somewhat relevant but does nothing special. If that's still missing in 2026, then that's a damning indictment on Heupel and he will have earned a hotseat.

His you l seat should definitely be warm considering what he's paid. This was supposed to be a down year, but this team did what every team he's fielded here does it faded, got exposed. Didn't get better. And with a young team that what you expect to happen.

I don't really think it matters who he brings in as pieces, because they don't really develop until year two anyway..... Save Aguilar, he's the exception to that rule. There's example after example if players not developing to contribute until year two.

Our high school commits haven't had a great track record save wr this year. I funny see any drastic changes to that dynamic happening. Though if be happy to be proven wrong.

Defense needs to be torn down and completely rebuilt. I'm not sure there's pieces I was starting for me anywhere on our current D. It's going to take two years to get the defense back to upper third respectability.

Save the young wr's I didn't see a lot to be positive about next year. This roster has been horribly managed/developed, especially on defense. But offensively there's been some issues, particularly with the line and some of the QB problems. That's on Heupel, Nico ultimately falls on him. But his offense is proving to be very predictable, give D coordinators more time and they figure it out. Just watch the arch of this year. Defenses started to figure out what we were doing and jumped all over it.

The future ain't looking at bright.
we just signed the number 9 class with 6 Navy All Stars. we have highest average per recruit in 15 years.

I see some missed evals, and I see a lot of projects not panning out. We are about to fix that glitch.

go to the porthole...

How do you fix that glitch without fixing those doing the developing and the evals?

In 2024 we signed the number 13 ranked class.

We don't have immediate success with the porthole, consistently it takes players two years to turn into solid contributors.

And for the sake of all that's good can he just hire an offensive coordinator or delegate clock management to someone else already. It's an issue for him in multiple games every year.

To just get beat somewhere else?

We missed the defensive players and Brazzels play making.

Were way too light on the interior d line.

And Max Gilbert???? Oy vey!

To be where we want to be, we’re going to have to spend huge.

Heupel isn’t a good enough coach to get us there at our talent level. His clock management and game awareness also leaves a lot to be desired.

Huge look in the mirror moment for him moving forward. Glad he had the awareness to change DCs.
I wouldn’t say it was all his choice. He was going to have to make changes regardless.

The music city bowl is an overpriced over hyped soon to be non bowl game. Bowls are meaningless now, they can only hurt. You get the practices whether you go to the bowl game or not. Maybe it is best to save them for the spring to develop pre season

I know our defense was not good all year, but it feels like every time we lost a game we had one incredibly stupid play that changed the trajectory, and our field goal kicker missed an important field goal.
Our offense also disappeared in 4 out of our 5 losses. Same ole **** different year. Probably more of the same next year also.

Where did you see the extra spring practice rule at? I tried to look it up and couldn't find it.

Someone posted it elsewhere. You don't get extra practices for bowl games, you just give up spring practices by taking them for the bowl games.

It was discussed about the time Notre Dame opted out, one of the explanations given was so they could prepare for the next season starting in spring.

Honestly that makes more sense, because the only ones that could join you otherwise are EE's.

I've never heard of losing spring practice days for bowl practices either. Strange. I'd like to see how that works

Here is a post that I recall seeing in early December.
As to whether the information is legit, well, the poster said it was obtained from GROK. 🤷‍♂️

Probably. I’m sure Knowles is doing his due diligence. Garner and likely Poindexter will be on staff. Not sure what the rest will look like.
