The first news of NCAA Football '11 has arrived.

From Pasta Padre.

My favorite part.
5. Formation Subs

If there's one thing that has been driving me nuts about "NCAA Football" lately, it's the omission of formation subs. I just couldn't figure out why it wasn't possible to substitute on a per-formation basis anymore. PlayStation 3 technology is better than PlayStation 2, right? The producers finally heard my pleas.

"Formation subs are back & that's the best way to put it," says Kiniry. "It's exciting for us as well because I love running two back systems, and there's nothing better than to be able to setup different formations with different backs. So now, just like how it worked on PS2, you'll be able to go in and for each formation, you'll be able to choose who you want in there. Cool thing is, you can do it while in-game in the pause menu, but for me, the biggest part is that it's a front-end option in Dynasty as well. So now, you can setup your Dynasty and Online Dynasty in the beginning of the year, and barring injuries, you can let it ride out, and those are your formation subs for the rest of the year.

"Now you can setup who you want as your hands team for an onside kick or who you want as the up back when you're running a fake punt & stuff like that. And even in a bigger case, if you plan to run with an option quarterback, now you can setup your flexbone and wishbone formation and not have to worry about subs when you're calling your plays. Now you have your formations subs already in there and you're ready to go.

Adds Haumiller: "This is by far the biggest request we've received from the community. They've asked for it and we were finally able to deliver this year. We're excited to let fans know that this is the type of approach we're taking with 'NCAA Football 11.' This year is really all about giving the fans what they want."

The screen displays some of the additions that are mentioned. The early info discussed includes:
  • Numbers on helmets
  • On-field referees
  • Tweaked Pro-Tak gang tackling
  • Auto-saves
  • Auto-loading of rosters
  • Formation substitutions
  • New equipment
  • Online Dynasty will have all bowl games played in a single week
  • Dynamic conference logos for when teams move conferences

sounds good to me

Seems like we are going to have a Madden clone. I fully expect all the gameplay additions to be directly from Madden last year. I just wonder what kind of features they come up with outside of gameplay.

I care more about core gameplay than presentation. Do away with the animation-caused warping and the ridiculous speed differentials.

Something that would be awesome but will never happen would be being able to do the recuiting in your dynasty on your cpu.

doing at least some of your team's management from your computer shouldn't be out of the realm of possibility in the future of the series, though. madden last year let you have the option in online franchises of doing almost all your team's management from the web. you could propose trades and everything online.

what would seem to be the problem doing recruiting from the cpu would be linking the entire prospect database to make it accessible from the web......which, at least to me, might present a few problems.

I would like some depth to the dynasty mode. They haven't really changed it at all in three editions. Competitive recruiting was last year and I have barely even touched it.

I am baffled by the people that want refs/chain gangs/etc on the field. I can see some guy saying, "my players can't play man coverage for sh*t, but I got some refs on the field so I'm really enjoyin' this game."

Having the refs on the field is a nice presentation addition since it adds to the realism of the experience. But like you said, if the core gameplay sucks, then it's pretty much all for naught.

well I would hope adding refs to the field doesn't take much effort and wouldn't really take much time away from improving game play.

I wonder what they plan on adding from the survey they put out last year if any:

Gameplay>Presentation

Make the gameplay the best it can be and then build the rest of the game around it. I'd definitely also love to see a much deeper Dynasty Mode.

Sadly, EA Sports just doesn't do all that much when it comes to additions to their titles it seems. Likely due to the annual release of the title and knowing it will sell regardless.

Oh and by the way.....i severely doubt the fact that the pic above is of gameplay...Maybe a title sequence but def not gameplay.

EA has a habit of throwing a fresh coat of paint and an air freshener on the games and tossing them out there.
