Offensive Line Men

In my humble opinion having a solid OL is not about setting foolish bench records. Its about having a group of MEN who posses pride and have a no-nonsense work ethic.

Talent helps too.

And having pretty much anyone not named Greg Adkins coaching them. I'd say the importance of those two is roughly equal.

If this line takes a big step forward then I think what many of us have felt and expressed about Adkins will be vindicated. We haven't had a good o-line coach since Mike Barry was pushed out or left several years ago. Doug Marrone looked good but didn't stick around long enough to make a real impact. Since then we've had several years of Jimmy Ray and Adkins. I think it is pretty evident why our o-line have had issues and why top talent quit coming to UT.

agree on your Cut statement.

Not sure why it wouldn't be a talent issue though. Why should anyone anticipate them being a lot better after not being very good under to different systems and coordinators?? IMO, talent is off and not at SEC level with most of the SEC teams we will play. Until this staff really upgrades, will take 3 more recruiting classes focused on OL, we won't be competitive.

In great measure I'm hoping that the under performance of the 3 4* SR starters is because of coaching and discipline. Scott, McNeil, and McClendon were all highly regarded coming out of HS but have all underachieved to this point. All 3 have the physical tools especially if they make McNeil keep weight on. I've read he can't do it but if the choice is doing it or sitting I suspect he'll find a way.

Vlad is probably the only one I'd call an overachiever.

Basically I'm hoping they are underachievers and weren't all 3 over rated.

I thought I remembered Monte saying in an interview that "I feel great, I don't know how much longer I'll coach". I may be wrong, but I thought it was a radio interview.

I remember a TV interview where he said something along the lines of, "I feel like I'm 28, not 68." Still, I too give him 2 or 3 years.

The thing is, Monte is around his son and grandchildren now. If he wants to spend time with his family, they're here. He can still work, get paid well and be close to his family.

If I were 68 and a millionaire I would not work.

Mitch Browning is considered one of the better OL coaches in the game. Don't forget about him.

It still blows my mind that he's a GA here.

Me too, why do people keep forgeting about him, Im pretty sure he and Chaney will get us bandaged up for this season, and have the Coach O,Gran and Thompson to the Recruit store with the list of what they need for next season.

Good comments, guys. And what do you all think about the tight end part of the blocking ... are you comfortable with Stocker and Cottam?

To the first point, I don't know. The talent is definitely there; it's not like these guys had a choice between UT or Mississippi Valley State. There will always be some flameouts among a recruiting class regardless of how good their coaching is. The fact that the line has continuously had top-level prospects and Arron Sears is the only first-day NFL pick really says something.

To the second point, I've got so many projects going on right now that I'm not sure when I'd be able to get to it. I'll stick it in the queue and see when I can get it done.

I think Cheney might have been the steal of the whole staff and has raised the bar significantly higher than Adkins had.

People blamed Clawson but I don't think Adkins ever produced an OL that was consistently good and well rounded. Cut basically worked around it with the hated "dink and dunk" because they couldn't run block or hold the pocket for more than 2 seconds.

My honest guess is when they say the pass blocking isn't where it has to be... it is already better than what they had under Adkins.

I have to agree with sjt18 here,,, I think this staff's expectations are higher and when they tell us where they are and where they want to be, it is on a higher plane.
