NFL.com Blogs Blog Archive Broncos keep QBs coach Bates away from Vols
Maybe I've overlooked it, but I have yet to see this posted on here. I'm assuming the job offer Kiffin extended to him was that of Offensive Coordinator? At this point it's irrelevant I suppose but it is interesting nonetheless. I know there had been speculation about Jeremy Bates early on but I hadn't heard much of late. Two thoughts I had on this development.
1)I am disappointed Bates decided against returning to Knoxville. From everything I hear and read he is an up-and-comer and has a wonderful, tactful football mind. I believe he would have done wonders with the development of our QBs. I would have like to have seen him back.
2)Coach Kiffin is serious when he speaks of bringing in the best. In most (if not every) interview CLK has done to this point he has made mention of going out and finding the very best players and coaches and bringing them to The Hill. The offering of Bates shoots down the ideas of Kiffin only bringing in "his" guys. Yes, the current staff consists of men with strong ties to CLK but that is the case with any staff. I don't think Kiffin would bring "his" guys in if he didn't believe they were the best candidates for their respective jobs.
I don't know about you guys but I get more excited for the 2009 season every day. I am disappointed Bates chose not to come join our new staff here at Tennessee. However I am excited for him and his new extension with the Denver Broncos. I don't doubt Kiffin will insert another highly qualified candidate into the OC position. (insert Billy Gonzales speculation here)
Merry Christmas to all of VolNation, and as always, Go Vols.
