Observation about the team and quitting..

Attitude like Hurd displayed is like a cancer in a team. It spreads to people around him that "think they are too cool/good/etc to listen". If what's been going around about Hurd is true then it was definitely for the best.

quitters on this team not now the only one that did left no 7 and no 1 the rest haven't quit.and an observation on hurd if you watched his running this year compared to last year he didn't hit the line like he did last year except for a few times. I think they finish winning out getting a decent bowl and finish strong.

Man, I hope you are right..

It's also a sign of a bigger issue. A sign that the team is losing confidence in Butch. Hurd and Williams are symptoms of an internal problem.

what? Hurd and Williams thought they were bigger than the team. Williams was pissed because a back-up quarterback was the #1 receiver and not him. Hurd was pissed because he thought the entire offense should be changed to cater to his abilities.

This TEAM lost to two top 5 teams. The South Carolina loss is on Hurd and Jones. Hurd for being a turd and Jones for not flushing him sooner.

Dobbs looked out of sorts against Al and SC. Do you think some of that may of been that he didn't know if his running back was going to lay it on the line or if he was just going to go through the motions? I think Dobbs knew he couldn't trust Hurd and that caused him to play poorly.

I hope i'm right, because if you are right, we are in for a long bumpy ride.

All of this involves pure speculation and you know what they say about speculation. It just makes an ass out of "u" and, uh, ...wait! All seriousness aside, though, the rest of the season will answer all our questions. How did Team 119 devolve into Team 120? I expressed concern the first two or three games of the season, but the response was "They're just playing 'vanilla'". Turns out, they weren't. The team was sick. I have my theories why, but, best to focus on the team performance as a whole. When team 119 lost a game, it was a glorious loss - they died with their swords in their hands. Team 120 lost to Alabama and S.C. without their swords. There was no glory in their losses. A major change has happened to the team chemistry. It can only be a good thing. Jelly Will Roll!

Well, those of you thinking we are going to have this great turn around are going to have a rude awakening. My point is, I don't think they are quitters. I do think they have been playing their hardest, but are being held back by an inept coaching staff.

And dont give me garbage about injuries. They looked like crap against App St., Ohio and to a degree VT.

I love these kids and think they have great heart, but their leadership is failing them off the field, on the field and in the locker room. This latest episode with Kongbo and Hurd are symptoms, not the disease.

How exactly is the coaching staff holding them back?? So, let me get this straight the coaching staff realizes how utterly talented the players are but chooses to hold them back so that not only do the players look bad but the coaches as well? And they are doing this all because CBJ is so in love with his system while telling the players this is the best coaching staff in America? You really do possess far superior intelligence than most people.

The team meeting Sunday wasn't all about Hurd. There are some other guys that are frustrated.

My take is that they were frustrated with LOSING and the team meetings were about getting the WINNING mojo and focus back.

Frustration comes from a variety of places - I suspect the players understand very well the difference between when one or many of them didn't play well verses play calls that did not work. And I suspect they clearly understand the abilities of themselves as well as their team mates.

Winners focus on what is needed to get better - losers complain and quit.

One bad attitude, if from a key player, left unchecked can derail a team.

I dare say a large part of the offensive game plan against SC centered around Hurd. If a player leaves the game because they are really too hurt to play, others will give all they got to cover - that is what happened in A&M - but the reverse doesn't work that way. Keeping in mind that more than likely most of these players play with sore body parts, if a key player is not really too banged up to play but is on the sideline refusing to play, it is very easy for the other players to focus on their frustration against said player and lose the focus needed to play well. The one player then becomes a distraction to the entire team and the coaching staff ends up having to deal with that rather than everyone focusing on the other opponent.

I wouldn't read too much into what was said or not said. These are still very young adults that have been told, for the most part, their whole lives that they are this or that. Parents are sometimes at the root of it. However, when they get into this level of sports, it will either make or break you. I believe it is easy for any of us to question their character or commitment, but egos are fragile. I think once Hurd witnessed Kamara and Kelly having more success behind a OL that most have blamed for Hurd's lack of production, the curtain slowly started to be pulled back. Whether or not it scheme or Hurd is hitting the holes slow........he is obviously not equipped for the spread. Looking back, maybe he should have been allowed to transfer last year. Butch is certainly not blameless, he might have been thinkin of the fall out if his 5* left the team..........hard to say. The whole Hurd business was handled wrong in all the camps.

GBO!!

Before Hurd's leaving was ever announced there were rumors of several players walking out of the Sunday team meeting, not just Hurd. Although I do think his attitude was influencing the team, I don't think he was alone and I certainly don't think he's the only player to be full of ego. I do think he was made an example to the rest of the team, so maybe they pull it together enough to finish out the season.

Bear Bryant said this:

“But there’s one thing about quitters you have to guard against – they are contagious. If one boy goes, the chances are he’ll take somebody with him, and you don’t want that. So when they would start acting that way, I used to pack them up and get them out, or embarrass them, or do something to turn them around.”

“The first time you quit, it’s hard. The second time, it gets easier. The third time, you don’t even have to think about it.”

Good quote from the Bear. I suspect CBJ tried the "do something to turn them around approach" - but should have taken the "pack them up and get them out" approach much earlier instead.

If Jalen wanted to make such a serious move, (in light of all the repercussions), who could stand in his way? As a parent of a young adult about to leave for college, all I can do is strongly suggest. When a child is a high achiever they have a strong sense of self, you can't make them do anything unless you have compelling information. Jalen is the one doing the work and, if he thinks he can do better somewhere else, he is already gone (in his mind). Best to let him go and everyone can move forward. Good luck to Jalen. Go Vols.
