Don't believe he ended a stem cell research ban. Believe he ended the ban on federal funding for said research. Jeez...imagine that.

That's right...the National Institutes of Health can now spend money from their research budget to fund stem cell research using stem cell lines in addition to those (I think 60) that were in place at the time Bush singed the moratorium.

I think it would also free up universities and any other entities that receive federal funding. Seems to be 2 sides to this fight while a 3rd side is ignored. That would be the side that does not give a damn about any of it except for the fact that more money is being used improperly. But, I guess we are way down that road already.

Yeah...there was some weird stuff you had to do. If you performed stem cell research with private funds, you have to fund that portion of your lab (facilities, utilities, etc.) with private funds. The amount of accounting was pretty ridiculous I think.

Obama's answer to the health care problem. "Health care, Shmelth care. I'll make it to where you can't get sick."

The problem I have with the whole mess is both sides have been telling have the story and putting out propaganda, now the waters are muddied and it's hard to know where the truth actually lies.

I saw a report last night that said we are already behind countries like France, Japan, and even Iran in this research. I guess you guys are cool with letting them get the patents on these drugs and selling them back to us? Is there anybody here that would refuse these treatments for their family or themselves because blastocytic cells were destroyed in the process?

I, for one, am glad he decided to do this. As I'm sure are the 75% of Americans who were against Bush's veto on this issue to begin with.

anyone else think stem cell research is never going to amount to anything of substance?

I like how everyone is an expert on stem cell research, and which source of stem cells will prove to be the most effective.

It will amount to more than you think. Being able to regrow healthy tissue for any part of the body is very powerful.

I think that if we ever see the type of paradigm-shifting treatments that are proposed that it will be a long way out (over 20-30 years or more, perhaps). But, I do think that we will see uses that are beneficial much sooner than that - just not of the repair entire organs variety....

being able to regrow healthy tissue that can actually be used may be a techinical leap we never make.

Yeah, and computers will never have a place in people's home either.

It's impossible to go to the moon in less than a decade...the sound barrier can't be broken...the list goes on.

Naysayers will always be there.

I see what your saying but there are also things proposed that never came to fruition.
