12:18 p.m. "When it comes to second-language learners, the most important thing is not to get bogged down in ideology, but figure out what works," Obama says. "Everybody should be bilingual, or everybody should be trilingual." The comments drew loud applause.

While I think it would be cool to speak several languages, as my wife does,( I think she's pretty cool), we have millions of adults in this country who can't read english. And how much would this cost? Is sarcasm a second language?

What is wrong with wanting people to learn the native language of a particular country? It's not ideology, it's common sense.

That is interesting. I don't have have a problem with it, but why doesn't he try this first. All illegal immigrants learn English first? Just a thought.

having lived in AZ for a few years I couldn't agree more. I would suggest that all be required to make the effort if 1 group is.

Ah...Obama telling everyone what they should be. Can he just write some books, give some speeches and never run for office again.

I know if I moved to Italy, Italians would probably expected me to at least attempt to learn Italian... good thought.

I can count to 100 in three languages, does that qualify me as trilingual?

Reminds me of that King of the Hill espisode where John Redcorn says "come college time, let's see what box you check".. talking about Nancy Gribble's son.

Obama really needs lower some of his lofty goals. Given what our public education system is producing, I think we really need to focus on getting one language down before we start getting crazy on two or three.

His latest plan is that everyone also learn the violin.
