Developing alternatives to oil would cause the price of oil to fall too. I'm not sure it's fair to say Democrats are in favor of high oil prices, just the means by which they're ultimately lowered.

Did you see Maria Cantwell's comments in the "Why Dems Don't Want More Drilling" thread?

Obama suggested the same sentiment - high prices will motivate us to ween ourselves off oil.

Clearly, some Democrats do favor high oil prices as a mechanism to motivate carbon emissions reduction and/or alternative energy sources

Replace some Democrats with most and I agree. They are tickled pink that the SUV is rapildly becoming a dinosaur.

i get so tired of dems/lib's attitude towards American, they treat American's like we're children and can't make a single decision for ourselves. such arrogance, amazingly these politicians will never have to worry about paying these outragous gas prices because we pay it for them.

the whole alternative energy is such a scam, it has tood us years and years to design cars to be efficient in using oil. do those dems really think we are suddenly going to design cars than run on wind and solar energy in just a couple of years? they know we can't. the libs/dems know the whole alternative energy is just tag line to avoid drilling and upsetting the fascist enviormental whackos.

So 'Maria Cantwell' is the voice of the Democratic party? Is Ann Coulter the voice of Republicans, or can I assign her to that? As far as Obama, again, he doesn't suggest that he either likes high gas prices or wants them. Obama may have suggested that this will motivate us due to a bad situation, doesn't mean he likes it. If someone is confined to a wheel chair they might get motivated to do certain things a different way, doesn't mean they enjoy being stuck in a wheel chair.

If you read my last comment, I say some. I never suggested Cantwell speaks for the Dem party - she is simply an example.

As for Obama, he indicated that the price was a problem because it rose too fast but not that absolute value was a problem. His policy choices clearly favor holding back on further oil development, coal and nuclear in favor of non-carbon alternatives. I don't think it's a stretch to suggest he and others who are like minded see the value in high oil prices.

I think he realizes that oil won't last forever and at some point we have to look at alternatives. Maybe he is too gung ho on that idea and not accepting enough of the drilling alternative. I personally don't see why we can't do both. Why not drill oil in Alaska and simultaneously look for alternative energy sources? As i have learned a little more about the situation I think it's OK to drill there. I admit I thought it was more of an environmental thing at first but hey, we all learn and have the ability to change our mind. In this case, I did. I would never be a good politician, too much of a flip-flopper. :)

I agree we should explore all options - I wish Obama and his party felt the same way.

Pelosi isn't allowing a vote on lifting the offshore ban because she claims to be saving the planet. Thanks Nancy!

Wow, do you realize you are more in tune with McCain's energy policy than Obama's. Ready to support McCain yet?:)

Exactly. A completely sane approach to the problem. Obama's insisting on not allowing all options is asinine.
