People here were mad at facts? I thought most folks preferred the truth to fantasy until I came back here.
With that said whats the long term outlook on Pruitt from those on the inside?
Honestly, it's very much wait and see.
People are extremely confident in having Coach Fulmer steering the athletic department as a whole.
That said, it is going to take some time before everyone buys in on Pruitt. People hated Dooley. A lot of people in the building thought very highly of Butch and most of his staff (Mike Vollmer excluded). Pruitt is a very different kind of guy. He hasn't taken the time to get to know a lot of people and has wanted to change things with some people who have been there a long time and have responsibilities with football.
Now, a lot of people from the outside will say that's a good thing, needed change, etc., but that's not necessarily true. The Butch Jones era didn't fail because of a media relations person or even the athletic trainer. It failed because of the people coaching every day. I don't think Fulmer is going to allow Pruitt to make some of the changes he has wanted to make with staff members that work WITH football but not FOR football. I think that is a good thing. That will be fascinating to watch as the next year or so progresses.
They allowed him to get rid of the head athletic trainer for football (not to be confused with the strength coach), which is not normally a position the head coach can influence. That was concerning to a lot of people.
I think Pruitt ultimately will have success, but the question is how much? You only get three years to prove yourself now in college football. And you're expected to win big in a conference that has never been better top-to-bottom. Fulmer never coached in a conference where Kentucky, South Carolina and Vandy had the resources to compete. That's the case now. Think about 2016. Butch made some critical mistakes with preparation and some other behind the scenes issues, but if he's playing 2006 South Carolina and Vandy, UT sleepwalks to wins in both of those games and UT is in Atlanta. While we were busy squandering our advantages 2009-13, the SEC Network money evened the playing field. Butch had to deal with it, Pruitt has to deal with it. It's not an excuse, but it's a reality.
