Notre Dame preparing "major" offer for Urban Meyer?

It is plausible for Meyer to leave Florida for South Bend, yet some of the contract specifics seem far fetched. 50,000,000 is completely absurd!

After reading the comments section under the article I'm calling BS on this. ND's plane untrackable.... The whole Nike "football only" deal.... 10 year contract?? This is BS.

I mean, sure Meyer has proven he can win, but Notre Dame is not Florida talent wise and according to his style of system. There is not another Tebow in sight in South Bend so........

Why is that absurd? He has a 6 year, 24MM contract now. That's a 25% yearly raise plus incentives to move. It will certainly take at least that to get him, particluarly since I am sure a Florida counter is sure to come.

As another point of reference, Saban got a Bama package worth 4MM/year, and he signed an extension in August that is certainly worth more. For ND to get Meyer, they will have to surpass those numbers.

It always baffles me when people underestimate the allure of the only really national university. ND has an in with every catholic school kid in the country and can probably get into the living room of any HS kid they want. They are possibly the only school with a recruiting advantage over those based in hotbeds like Florida, California, and Texas.

Minimize the Irish's self-imposed academic restrictions and they are a bomb just waiting for the right coach to lifght the fuse.

Yeah the 50 mil/10 year contract doesn't seem that crazy considering the school and coach. ND's desperate for a proven winner and Meyer's arguably the top coach in the country.

There isn't another Tebow in sight in Gainesville, or anywhere else for that matter.

Florida has an edge in recruiting but Notre Dame recruits pretty well too. I don't know what Urban will do, both places have draws, advantages and disadvantages. I think it would be very hard for him to leave UF given the position he is in there though.

Meyer's proven and a great recruiter so I doubt he'll have any trouble attracting talent to ND. Weis did it.

If true, kinda make sense that they'd offer that much to pull Meyer away. Meyer's buyout is only 500,000. Normally to hire a one of the best coaches at one of the top universities will cost you as much as they are going to pay Weis. So only having to pay 500,000 on top of Weis's buyout allows them to offer a bigger contract. They pry wouldn't offer that much if Meyer's buyout was the same as Weis's.

If true I would be happy and disappointed at the same time. To be the best you have to beat the best. I want to see Lane dethrone Meyer. If Meyer leaves though it does give Tennessee a better chance to cherry pick recruits out of Florida. Unless it's Charlie Strong this staff would have better relationships with the kids then Florida's new staff. Some kids from Florida may hesitate to sign with a first year staff. If Meyer leaves it will definitely benefit Tennessee.

Maybe. But to be champion, you have to beat the people you play.

Your last sentence is spot on, though. Dude built a juggernaut in Gainesville, and I wouldn't mind not seeing him on the schedule every year.

If you are the AD at ND and you want to keep your job a little longer, you absolutely MUST make a massive and public offer to Urb. Anything less will result in the ND boosters and fans feeling that maximum effort was not made.

Yes, you do, and if there are any legs under the Stoops rumors, that wouldn't be a bad consolation.

The question, though, is if those two guys fall through in very public fashion, does that run the risk of queering the deal with Kelley?

It says a lot when every ND fan posting underneath the article think it's total BS. And ND and their fans are the biggest BS'ers around so if they can spot it then chances are it is what it is - BS.

The only problem I could forsee is that when they work their way down the list, Kelley could easily say that he won't move unless he gets the same offer as Meyer/Stoops/etc. got. This will be an interesting year for the coach poachers. I think that alot of big public unversities will be hamstrung in fending off poachers by upping the ante with more $ due to shrinking state budgets and massive layoffs of government employees in many states. ND should have a real shot at getting whoever they want provided that money matters to their target.

The only real drawback I see for Notre Dame as a program relates to recruiting and the obstacles of 1) being in a crappy climate and 2) lack of talent... of the female variety. And those things won't really change. Otherwise, you have everything it takes to win readily available.

the trick will be getting the recruits accpeted into ND

I hope he goes...

It is, of course, speculation, but it sounds like that might be included in the package:

"2.) 3 "special" projects a year, which may include JUCO transfers."

I'm sure that the guy who posted the stuff was taking a shot in the dark, but if Weiss is fired then you have to know that ND will absolutely offer to Coach Meyer more money than has ever been offered for a NCAA coaching job along with whatever other incentives they can come up and they will do this in a public way so that all of their fans know that they did everything they could to get their #1 choice. I don't know the situation at Gainesville, but I know that FSU just mailed out 50 pink slips to faculty members. I'm guessing that it is a statewide problem and, no matter how he may try to spin it, the UF AD is not going to be able to politically justify a million dollar per year + raise to Urban when other university employees are losing their jobs in a bad economy.
