All of our newcomers at WR look good right now. They just got here more or less.

This past spring Jeff George looked good.

Malone first spring he looked good...5 star good.

I have a feeling next year,

unless Azzani is gone...these new wrs who look so good right now, will have regressed by that time.

North also looked great his freshman year.

Sorry about the negativity...
I just don't understand how he can take so much talent and waste it...

I agree with GA about North. He was hurt early on in the season. It's hard to blame that on ZA.

But I think it's fair that a lot of eyes will be on Azzani this year, to see how this current group performs throughout the season.

I'd really like to see Malone step up. And from all reports, Preston Williams looks the part this year.

Josh Smith should be solid with another year under his belt.

If the WR don't perform well this year ZA needs to be let go. I saw a lot of good throws dropped last season.

FTR, I'm no fan of Azzani either, but your post is entirely either fabricated or selective memory.

Malone looked good athletically in his first practices, but not so much catching the ball and running routes. He almost transferred because of how hard he was hounded due to his struggles.

George's struggles in the spring early on were well documented. Had a lot of drops and trouble adjusting to the speed of things at first.

North was always a physical specimen, but he had struggles as a freshman also. Especially when it came to route running and getting open.



The reports about the Byrd, Johnson, and Callaway looking good at WR have pretty much all noted that they look better earlier than most of our past guys have (especially in the hands department). I know that doesn't fit your narrative though.

I wonder if he is trying to master his craft or not?

I don't hear any changes in his coaching tactics.

"Pump and Pull"
"Stay low and drive"

I heard him try to correct B Johnson before a rep( something about how his hands were presnap)

Johnson didnt change anything and just ran his route and he looked good.

I think Azzani needs to stop changing some many of these kids natural tendencies so much. He's training them all the same way.... But they are different types of Wrs.

AND he's putting to much instruction into simple movements.

It's like hes not learning...
Or EVOLVING as a WR coach

Many of the other receivers also were injured last year and one was playing a new position . Also, Dobbs was very erratic with his passes and I can not put the blame on them. I think Dobbs will show that he has improved over the off season and the the passing game will be much better this Fall. I think if CBJ believed that Azzani was the problem, he would have been replaced during the off season. I remember that the few times Dormany threw passes, the receivers caught the passes which were in range of the target. So far in the first three practices this Fall, the Qbs and Wrs have been pretty much on target. However, those passes this Fall have been mostly uncontested.

Lets let the season progress and get support our team and get behind our coaches. Way too early to start this negative stuff before the pads are on.

Thing is all of our wrs have had injury problems. I think part Of it is Azzanis mechanical style of playing WR.

I believe azzani is a good enough coach, but injuries/suspensions have limited his opportunities to showcase his product on the field the last two years. That being said, your point/observation is a fair one. The more naturally talented players have been underwhelming. Conversely, less 'natural' athletes (Josh Smith, Johnathan Johnson, etc) have overachieved during azzani's time here. Because the players that have stayed healthy have shown improvement, I would assert that he is at least competent. Also, it is rare that elite WRs actually block with effort. Our WRs have blocked with effort during Azzani's entire time at UT. Just what I've observed. I'm not arguing that my opinion is right or that anyone else is wrong. Hopefully this is the year we stay healthy at all positions and enjoy the fruits of all our players/coaches hard work.

The passing game needs
1. Consistent QB play.. All throws
2. Great protection
3. WR 's that get open and catch the ball
4. Play calling

Serious question.....have you coached receivers at any level?

Sounds like you want ZA to not instruct them at all and just let them play. I don't care how much natural ability you have you need coaching to improve. I agree that the WR have not been standouts the past few years, but I can't say it's all ZA fault.

By the same token of you criticizing him are you willing to praise him if they perform this year? Sounds like you are setting it up to be like they were naturally good if they perform well this year.

I'm not CZA fan he apparently can't coach and develop talent at wr position. I'll give him this year only because he's under contract.if we struggle at wr this year and windup with 8 or 9 he's got to go

I thought the stigma of Josh Smiths being less talented would have died off by now.

Josh Smith has been our fastest WR since he came to UT.

HES VERY TALENTED.
Hes got hands, hes tough. Acrobatic, and very quick.

Hes an NFL talent...

I have been a WR coach for the last decade and you're absolutely correct about coaching the finer details. Consistent performance at ANY position rest considerably on sound fundamentals/technique. Granted each player is different, but good technique is good technique no matter the player's individual talent. Many on this board seem to want to argue that Azzani 'overcoaches' these details and somehow 'restraining' these talented WRs. I assert that his diligence equips them by making the fundamentals of the position second nature. There are many factors surrounding this topic that none of us on volnation know, which makes everything we say conjecture. CBJ knows and has proven he can identify quality coaches, even ones that are relatively unknown. If he decides to keep or replace CZA I trust his decision.

He has yet to have a WR room that is both healthy and has its best talent in veteran players (largely due to injuries).

None of our receivers have been able to get open well with the exception of josh smith and pig Howard. I'm not sure why that's been and it points to azzanni.
