Not targeting ??

That's nuts. It looks like obvious targeting to me.

Definitely some inconsistency on the targeting call right now. Do refs from different conferences have different criteria that they are looking for on certain calls? Or is it the same across the board?

The article I read said "may have been targeting" but the review booth chose not to "interfere" with the game. Said the replay will only intervene on obvious targeting. This looked fairly obvious to me, so not sure why they didn't intervene and throw a flag. The guys was out cold laying on the turf for a while, they had plenty of time to review the hit.

Big12 officials in the booth for that game...don't you guys know that Tx always has the fix in on all their games?

No need for us to continue to get lathered up over this. The punt returner JRM hit was on one knee so the official had no choice but to call some kind of personal foul. We all know JRM was not trying to hurt anyone but simply got taken in by the moment. He may not have been able to pull off at all given how fast he was running down on coverage. Stuff happens. The plays happen so fast there is no way to cover every possibility. It likely won't happen again, so good for us it was game one. I think Butch was saying the return man maybe called fair catch when the ball was kicked. How are the return guys supposed to know? Might be a good idea for the NCAA to require an official to hold up his arm or something. I am guessing JRM makes up for it against VT with some stellar play.

I watched the replay several times and the punt returner did put up his arm to where his right hand was at about his helmet level almost like he was about to raise his hand to ask a question. He did not raise his hand over her head and wave it back and forth to signal for a fair catch. The actual rule states, "ARTICLE 2. A valid signal is a signal given by a player who has obviously signaled his intention by extending one hand only clearly above his head and waving that hand from side to side of his body more than once." The Appy State player's actions did not constitute a fair catch in my understanding of the rule.

The punting team must be watchful to see if a fair catch signal was made. There is no need to make a referee signal that the returner signaled for a fair catch. I do not want my cover guys looking over at a referee when they need to focus on the return man. In this case, the call was also that JRM did not give adequate space to make the catch.
