Not Hard to Understand Drop Off This Season

In 24 SEC contests this season, Tennessee has committed 25 fielding errors to its opponent's 13 (this doesn't include the errors vs Vandy). The Vols have committed 49 errors to their opponent's 43 in all contests during the 2025 season. Stolen bases attempted vs. Vols 33/CS 7. Fielding % is .971 or 12th in the conference. Hitting and pitching can't overcome this.
Add in the Vandy series and the fielding woes just get worse. Make that 31 errors in 27 league games, a .968 fielding % that is 16th (aka last) in the conference.

I 100% believe there’s something to this. Started with the LSU strike zone a year or two ago (I can’t find the meme), but, in my opinion, it’s a subtle way of retribution for the brash nature of the Vols, especially in the recent past. I don’t see how else anybody in their right mind could call some of those pitches the way they did. Inconsistent officiating at the plate will affect a team, no doubt.

I've heard two things about college baseball when it comes to National Titles:
1) Winning a NC in baseball is THE HARDEST thing to do in all of college sports, including basketball.
2) Repeating as NC in baseball is THE HARDEST thing to do in ALL OF SPORTS, including pro ball leagues.

I'm ok and happy with where this year's squad is right now.
Now if these fielding errors and such drip over into next season, then we need to talk about issues and changes.
But, I trust Tony V and Company to right the ship and iron things out.

There's only one direction to go from a national championship and it's not up. South Carolina was the last team to repeat in 2010-2011. Florida in 2018 was the last SEC team to even play .500 ball the year after winning it all.

2023 champ: LSU - 2024 SEC record 13-17
2022 champ: Ole Miss - 2023 SEC record 6-24
2021 champ: Miss. State - 2022 SEC record 9-21
2020 champ: Covid-19 - 2021 SEC record 0-30
2019 champ: Vandy - 2020 SEC record (Covid)
2018 champ: Oregon State - 2019 PAC-12 record 21-8
2017 champ: Florida - 2018 SEC record 20-10
There’s a drop off after winning the CWS. See Vandy, Ole Miss, Mississippi State, and LSU. Maybe even add Texas AM on the list even though they didn’t win it.
The BaseVols 15-12 SEC record heading into the Hogs series isn't great based on the current standards. However, it wasn't that long ago that SEC mark, along with a 39-13 overall record, would have been cause for celebration at this point in the season. CTV and his staff have raised the expectations in Vol Nation and rightfully so.

Also look at the last seven CWS winners -- six are from the SEC, with the potential for a seventh this season. The SEC is an extremely tough grind each season, but especially so this year.

As others have said before, no team in the country should want to see Tennessee in their Regional as a 2-3 seed, drop off or not.

SEC teams have run all over pitching and catching out there on the base paths, too many signals and indications the Tennessee pitcher is going home with the pitch, having a hard time throwing anybody out at second or third base, we have like 4 catchers on the squad, game changes with opposition runners in scoring position, throwing errors yesterday took Tennessee out of a winnable game,

Heard Vandys coach today on the radio. He was talking about the Saturday game and how they mainly wanted to get on base as they k ew they could steal bases and put runners in scoring position easily. Vandy hasn’t been the only team, Kentucky seemed to steal easily.

We really need to get a good defensive catcher with an arm to overcome this,

Johnny Bench couldn’t throw out runners with Phillips pitching

Peebles isn’t an elite defensive catcher by any means, but he is responsible for about 0% of the issues we’ve had on Saturdays. Guys are 3/4s of the way to 2nd by the time he receives the ball.

young team, I just hope us fans high expectations doesn't run anybody off
Certainly a younger team than last year, but the young team label is overblown. Kilen, Ensley, Bargo, Fischer, Chapman, Doyle, AJ, Marcus, Snead...

Just named 5 of the top 6 hitters including 70% of the power production and 4 of the best arms on the team that are most likely gone next year. There's talent, but it's not yet proven. Gonna rely on churning and burning in the portal again.

And losing 7 position players (incl 5 guys who hit >20 HRS), the entire starting pitching rotation, and Aaron Combs and Kirby Connell didn’t help. I will take a top 20 team after winning the NC.
Next year’s team should be really good. This group of freshmen, with some development, will make for a really talented core. Levi Clark, Newstrom, Marin, Abernathy, Lawless, Grimmer, Kuhns, Krenzel, etc. And lest we forget, we get to add Anson Seibert. Plus, we signed a lot of great pitching talent that’s redshirting this year…Hayse, Strickland, and Abraham.

Would also think that CTV will be hitting the portal hard too.

Let me 1st say that I am actually proud that we aren’t on here moaning, growning, bit;:$&g and complaining about this team. I visit sights like Vandy, LSU, Texas Am and South Carolina after they lose a game and it’s like the world has ended. They are wanting to burn their stadium down sometimes. lol. Us and Ark tend to be a lot more sensible.

For one I am glad that our freshman are getting so much playing time. It will pay off next year and beyond. TV will hit the portal for some pitching next year and we will be just fine. For now I’m just happy to watch them play ball! GBO

Our right handed pitchers gotta work on holding runners. The announcer pointed out on Saturday that Phillips only looks back at runners once, when he turns his head back to home plate, the runner was taking off. We don’t give the catcher much help to say the least but this is something that has to be addressed, we’ve had this issue for 2 years, at some point we have to say we got a problem that must be fixed fast.

Man, look at what we lost from last year. Moore, Burke, Amick, Stark (almost your whole infield), Tears, Dreiling, Sechrist, Beam, Combs, Connell, and Causey. That's virtually all of your hitting, all of your starting pitchers, and almost all of your relief. Most importantly, a lot of leadership gone. You don't replace that in a year. We've struck gold with Doyle, and added some good hitting in Fischer and Kilen but there's still a lot of youth.

Allowing the other team to steal at will is a major problem. Every walk or single becomes an extra base hit essentially. Allowing teams to consistently be in scoring position is a recipe for disaster. I know about coach Anderson’s philosophy on concentrating on the hitter and not changing your delivery but something has got change or we will continue to lose to good offensive teams.

I think you have to get Abernathy and Newstrom in the everyday lineup. Once postseason gets here, I think Phillips is in the bullpen.
And you don't put him in unless they have a runner on third base. He has dug himself in a big hole. He has to hold runners better.

I'm as tough as anyone on my Vols over the years as an ex-Vol and ex-pro. However, I have not thrown in the towel with this team yet, nor am I completely devastated by our play. I'm a realist, and we were going to have a SIGNIFICANT drop-off this year, regardless of who we brought in, due to what we lost! Guys and gals, the '22 and '24 teams will go down as two of the BEST college baseball teams ever!!! Hard to repeat that year after year. We can still make a Super Regional this year - which, for this team, would be huge! I like the attitude we had this weekend. We need to keep it. It IS the Tennessee reputation that I love and the kids need to embrace. Now, we do not have the pitching past Doyle to win past a Super Regional this year - period - full stop. So, let's hope we host a regional, win it, and go give someone at a Super the "Notre Dame" treatment.

Oh, and I think, don't know, but I think that the Frank A. attitude about holding runners on and getting mount to plate times down to 1.4 or better is going to get a refreshing overhaul this Fall. I just have this feeling............

You are correct as well as another poster pointed out the same thing

Catcher isn't the problem. Our pitchers, especially Phillips give the catcher almost no chance.

The high leg kick by Phillips doesn't help either.
