The issue that UT is facing is not a difficult one to understand. There are a few facts in football that cannot be disputed. One is the longer the defense is on the field, the more likely they are to give up points. The second is in order to keep your own defense off the field, the offense must get first downs, a third is the offense needs to score points to put pressure on the other offense to keep up while allowing your own defense to rest.
Think about the past and when UT was elite, we had good QB's. maybe not all American type, but solid college quarterbacks. When was the last real solid college QB that we have had? Certainly not in the last 5 years. You can tell a serviceable college QB by the fact they get drafted or sign as an UFA (Bray is a good example) although they may never play in the league, they are there and have a chance. We havent had anyone in that conversation in years. Until we do, we will continue to suffer.
These facts cannot be disputed in any manner. Our offense is 68th in 3rd down conversion, (LSU is the only SEC team behind us) and 63rd in time of possession (only Arkansas is behind us and only by 4 seconds per game). Until we have a QB who can move the ball and convert third down, we will continue to suffer. Now whether the problem lies with Pruitt, Cheney, or covid....I do not know and do not pretend to understand why that bum continues to play, BUT I do know as long as he is out there, we will continue to suffer. When 3rd and 4 is a hard conversion, there are QB problems. A few NFL teams have suffered with this very problem for decades and still dont have it fixed.
