Non-Lady Vol Basketball News 2025-26

I’ve always thought they would make sense in the Big 10

Football has come a long way in the Big 10 but a lot of the schools are still what I would call “basketball schools.”
I believe the Big Ten has also shown interest (though I could be confusing it with the B1G). But also no dice. UConn football being bad for a decade+ really hurt conference realignment for the school. Among other things.

I wish if we could rebuild the old BE but that isn’t going to happen. I’d much prefer UConn be in a stronger conference (if only for more exciting games) but alas. They don’t ask me.

Unbelievable stat: Take away Uconn, and the rest of the Big East is 2-24 against ranked teams. And the two wins were hardly headlining (Villanova beat #25 WVU and St John's beat a then ranked #18 OKSU.)
Only 3 SEC teams have a winning record against AP ranked teams.
The bottom 5 teams in the SEC are
4 - 43 against AP ranked teams.
And one of those 4 wins was against a team close to our heart.

Not sure what the point of restricting a record search to the bottom five SEC teams would be. I would assume those 47 ranked games were largely intraconference.

The SEC is putting ten teams into the Tournament this year. Two of the members might be #1 seeds. Two others will be #2 seeds.

Don't waste time talking to me about the bottom 5 teams, every conference has that handful of dregs at the bottom every season. It's the top third of the conference this year that makes for a deep and talented group of 5-6 teams that can make noise in the tourney in March.

Not LSU? They are certainly more than bracket filler. Any coach that haberdashers down at voodoo shops in the vieux carre has all my respect…
Maybe... According to Mulkey's outfit...

Btw: I would say that about every conference, lots of them are just bracket fillers..

Contenders Big Ten
UCLA
Michigan ( maybe)
Big 12
TCU possibly
Big East
Connecticut

One thing about Women's NCAA tournament it's so easy to predict the winners to each game.. Helen Keller could possibly have a 100% bracket.

How many of the ten are actual contenders and not just bracket fillers?

3 imo
South Carolina
Texas
Vanderbilt
At a minimum I think you have to add LSU and OK.

edit: I now see you were talking contenders. I was talking teams that could make noise, like get to the EE or possibly the FF. There are 5 of those type teams in the SEC this year.

You left out the ACC…..on purpose?

You are absolutely right! And I do wish they were in a better conference with 2 or 3 losses right now. It is not good going into the tournament undefeated...especially where you are not tested very often throughout the year.
There is no doubt that the Big East is a horrible conference right now. However, to say that they could not go undefeated in the SEC this year is to say that they are not one game better than South Carolina who has won every SEC game this season except for one. Keep in mind UConn beat SC twice in fairly easy fashion last year including once in Columbia. If SC can go 15-1, Vandy 13-3, and Texas 13-3, why is it hard to believe UConn could go 16-0. Admittedly they would not have an average margin of victory of 40, but unless you believe SC is so much better than UConn, it is not ridiculous to believe they could go undefeated this year in conference.

In past years The Big East was a formidable conference and during this six year outperformed all other conferences in the NCAA, and during this period UConn still managed undefeated seasons.

UConn should have went to the Big Ten years ago, and would’ve loved to have. The Big Ten had an athletic payout of around $80 million last year, while the big East was somewhere around 7 million.

The Big Ten chose Rutgers because they wanted the New York city market. For some reason they didn’t realize New York City is more aligned with UConn (it’s the sixth borough) than Rutgers ever was. Comparing the University of Connecticut’s athletic success compared to Rutgers’s athletic success. I would have to think the Big Ten regrets their decision. Of course, the only sporting concern they had was football, and UConn has not ever had a decent football team.

If UConn was afforded 73 million additional dollars, they could’ve fielded a decent enough football team. This year they were 2-1 against the ACC and beat the ACC‘s conference championship team, with the one loss involving snatching defeat out of the hands of victory.

All that to say, yes it would be nice to be in the Big Ten, but they never asked.

I totally agree with you. Being a Uconn fan over here, I try not to toot uconn's horn too much! Plus, I hate fans who toot before there's something to toot about anyways! I do agree that uconn could be undefeated in the SEC this year or they could have a couple of losses. Without a doubt though, over the past 30 years or so, Uconn would have done very well in the SEC. Definitely would have had a few more losses and definitely would not average 30-40 point blowouts nightly, but they would have done very well. The excitement for regular games against tenn, south Carolina, lsu etc would have been off the charts! It really is too bad they are stuck in the Big East. At least Geno tries to schedule tough OOC games every year.

This isn’t going to devolve into a civil war discussion is it?

Excellent post, have shared the same thoughts before as well as the ACC previous hopes. It’s a shame a school like UConn never found a landing spot.
