Nolen: "If I was looking for NIL money..."

...I would have come to UT." Hmm, maybe we do have this NIL thing figured out.

Walter Nolen responds to rumors of NIL money playing a factor in his college decision

Nolen, an Under Armour All-American, chose the Aggies over Tennessee, Georgia, Alabama and Florida

If we are doing better than these three at NIL money, that would be super surprising - or maybe not. GA and Bubba have the incentive of "come here to play for championships". Gators? well they are a mess right now.

Except Georgia can't use "come here and play for championships"🤣🤣

Disclaimer: I don't know anything about this kid or his character.
I see posts about him being soft, lazy, etc. yet he is the #1 recruit?
I don't understand how he could be rated where he is and be soft and lazy.

Just a guess... camps. The recruiting sites in particular struggle with accurately rating linemen because they seldom face very good competition in HS. Camps weigh more heavily. A couple of good performances and great measurables... impress those who spread the stars.

I don't know about lazy. I saw enough video to say he isn't soft. But there is evidence that he had a habit of not playing with a high motor consistently. I think it is widely accepted that he took plays off. Some have mentioned a smaller OL who is likely not a D1 prospect who handled him in the playoffs. Those are real concerns

IMHO based on that primarily... I don't think it was money. I think he's right. There are people around UT who would have paid him. I personally think it was about Rodney Garner and Heupel. Heupel doesn't promise anything but an opportunity to compete. He emphasizes it. He emphasizes "fit" and that he doesn't want guys to come if they don't think they are a fit. Garner makes no bones about how he coaches players or what his demands are. He doesn't apologize for pushing guys to their limits.... and I can't imagine him pushing someone to sign with him if they aren't ready for his style.

Nolen may have made the very best choice for himself... or everyone now throwing rocks at him may be celebrating him coming home through the portal in a year or two.

Honestly, it is pretty dumb for fans to take personal shots at him. None of us "know"... and we want to leave him a bridge.

I only watched him twice for a couple of minutes each -
Early in the season I thought - how is this kid rated so highly?
Watched a little in the playoffs - he has crazy quick closing speed for as big as he is.
His upside is extremely high. Not someone that will start as a freshman but if he works hard - he will be extremely good. You really can't teach - really big, really quick.

Well, after watching our guys play hard and never quit, taking plays off would not go over well..

Thanks for the responses.

I probably watched the same videos and you aren't wrong. But I watched Phillips' videos too... and you could have been watching the same guy. The one thing I noticed about Phillips though was that he never seemed to get turned. His shoulders stayed parallel to the LOS. Phillips is said to have a high motor and is very intelligent. Not sure if he's underrated or Nolen is overrated or both... but I really, really don't feel bad about UT's end of that bargain.

Yep, UT= 1794
Texas was 89 years later, 1883. Think about this all the people in the first class at University Tennessee were dead by the time Texas had a University. We are the real UT and it's not even close.
when I lived in Austin I pointed this out to my coworkers pretty often during football season. I was not very popular with them as I also pointed out that Texas would be northern Mexico if not for some fearless Volunteers from the great state of TN.

Just saw where two guys both rated our D line recruiting at A, and A+, so we have a great class - - where we need help is in the d backfield and at linebacker where our recruiting was not that great.

Not to mention, if not for Tennesseans, Texas would still be part of Mexico...

@VolBricks beat me to it... 👍

Great to hear about the D-Line. Linebackers with experience from the portal hopefully is Heupel’s plan. Good freshmen LB’s aren’t too plentiful.
