I don't really like starting threads, especially following the trash that everyone watched last night, but after attending the game in Columbia there are some things that I'd like to throw out there.
The little pill first:
I hadn't been to Williams Brice since like 2006, but I found it to be a lot more comfortable than Neyland. Getting in and out was fast and not congested like our concourses. The metal bleachers have backs to them and it's quite nice not having someones knees in your back and plenty of leg room. I was sitting on the 50 yard line, upper deck row 20, and it doesn't seem as steep. It was difficult to find the score/yards/etc. It's not a loud place like Neyland, and it's not even close. VERY fair-weather. Most of my section liked me, but I trolled them the entire time. I'd participate in "sandstorm" with my orange shaker. Their band is pretty rude and wouldn't let our little pep band even get a jam in. Not even sure why they go. Their video board and sound system is VERY clear. Far superior to ours, IMO. Overall, I had a good time. Their intro is a joke, btw.
The horse pill:
It's year 4 and the team is bad. I have no idea how we pulled off beating UF and UGA and then lost to the Gamecocks. I swore that I wouldn't complain as long as we beat UF, but damn I feel pretty sick about the loss.
#1 is gone. I don't expect to ever see the Iowa/Northwestern Jalen Hurd again. I don't know what's happened, but that ship has sailed, and the USS Kelly has arrived.
Our QB. Not good. It's unbelievable how fun Josh Dobbs was to watch for a season and a half and then POOF. Nowhere to be found. This, IMO, falls on coaching. He was playing better off the cuff and unprepared. But after plenty of time in the "system", he over thinks things and doesn't let his natural ability take control. I can almost see the future every time he sits back in the pocket and throws over the middle. If I can see it, good lord why can't he and the coaches. (Our coaches, because opposing coaches see it).
#2 (Tuttle) ....I just don't see it happening.
Kyle Phillips? A lot of hype but I don't really recall seeing him like ever.
Dormady? If Dobbs isn't going to use his legs anyways, then why not put the better passer in the game? I'm not normally the one to make claims that the back up QB is better, but we're not utilizing Dobbs talent in this scheme anyways, so it makes no sense to sit Dormady. Dormady is perfectly capable of handing the ball off to a RB and throwing a slant 10 times a game.
Team 119 would beat Team 120. Getting a big lead early and then blowing it was actually a lot more fun to watch.
Permanent captains....let's not.
Debord needs to go. ZA needs to go.
Final act. A FG. ARE YOU KIDDING ME??!?! I had a better chance of making that FG than Medley. Bench the kid and move on. This might be the most frustrating/eye opening play of the Butch Jones era. A good kicker is almost as important as a good QB. So what's the issue? Can we not recruit a good kicker? It's ONE position. I mean good lord can someone compile a list of the top 10 high school kickers and I will personally go sell UT to them. Out of the 10, I PROMISE I will get one of them to Tennessee. I've been a fan much longer than Jones or any other "coach" on our staff and I guarantee I can open their eyes to the beauty of Knoxville and running through the T. We just need ONE. Just ONE of them. To KICK the ball THROUGH the uprights.
I could go on and on, but we all see it. The ceiling is 10 wins with Jones. If you're happy with that, I understand. I really do. Because I remember the 5-7 Dooley years. But if we're going to accept being the 8-4 team with an occasional 10 win season, can we at least get someone a little more personal and less robotic than Butch Jones? Dan Mullen has personality. Bret Bielema has personality. Muschamp has personality. Les Miles has personality. All of the aforementioned could give us what Jones is giving us. The question is, could they give us more?
