Crazy to think over his career that this was only his 2nd win as lower seed.
To what extent is this a function of 1) him getting the most out of his teams during the regular season, with the result that they're not seeded higher than their talent, and 2) his teams consistently earning low seeds and having only excellent teams seeded lower?

That but he is also 71 who's been around forever. So even at smaller schools to start his career, he never really took lower tier schools into march and upset teams.

JMO, but once you get to the dance, anything goes. Never know who’s going to have their best night or their most mediocre night in their last 10 or 12 games and get beat. Get to the Sweet 16, you’re among the nation’s best. That’s where anything really goes. Enjoy it. Gonna be pulling hard for the VOLS to get to the Elite 8 again. But some of y’all sound like you wanna go back to the Wade, Buzz, Kevin O’Neil days, etc. Better enjoy this because you never know what tomorrow brings. Could bring 20 years of NIT tournaments. Enjoy that.

He has had close ones. He had Clemson as a 4 seed. Lost to 1 seed Minnesota in double OT.

9 seed Providence lost to 8 seed OSU by one in OT.

6 seed Texas beat 3 seed Miss. State and lost to 2 seed Oregon by 2.

7 seed Texas lost to 2 seed Duke by 5.

Looking at his brackets over the years, he has lost a bunch of close games. Half of it is coaching, but you certainly have to have luck, too. He’s gotten better with age.
