No long ball?

Just wanted to get your opinions on why we didn't test Cal over the top last night. Was it the young, inexperienced receivers? Ainge's pinky? Or just poor play calling? When it became obvious we wouldn't keep them honest by going long, Cal took advantage and cheated up. Can't figure out why we didn't give it a shot at least once...

We did one time with Kenny Oneal. A deap pattern on the left side and a cut over center. Ainge's pass fell incomplete there was a double team coverage whitch shows the respect Cal was giving.

Cal overcompencated for last year and kept the WRs in front of them all night long. I think that played a big part. We really didn't go deep much vs Cal last year either. The WRs just kept breaking tackles after short catches.

Seriously though, why would you have Lucas Taylor try to run up the middle of the line at the goal line? He's a small guy and it seems like the only chance he'd have of doing something would be when the defense is more spread out so he could use his speed. That's why running backs like Tiki Barber and Barry Sanders were sometimes taken out of the game at the goal line. Put in the big guys and let them just fall forward. Lucas Taylor might be the smallest guy on the team. Ainge and his broken right hand split wide all by himself on the left side of the field really fooled a lot of people.

If one looks at the play Taylor has Foster to his right if he pitches it as in option Foster has a sure TD.

Okay, listen close here...

Ainge could have his pinky finger amputated and it wouldn't make any difference in his ability to throw. It might affect his grip on the ball, but the pinky has NO effect on how far, how accurate, or how hard the ball can be thrown.

The reason there were no long passes is because the pass blocking was average at best. In the fourth quarter especially, Cal's defense was getting a lot of pressure up front and their DBs were sinking back into either a deep-3 or possibly a deep-4 to take away any possibility of long passing. Of course, it would make no difference because the LT wouldn't allow Ainge enough time to get a 7-step drop anyway.

Third, Lucas Taylor running an option from in close was a terrific call. The reason the play didn't work was because the DT (don't remember number) zipped between the backside guard and center; when #94 forced Taylor back inside, the DT (who should have been sealed off entirely) was there. It was poor execution up front that destroyed that play. Get the block, it's a touchdown. There's no excuse for a guard being unable to seal off a three-foot gap before a DT gets to the heel's depth. The center really should've just jabbed backside with his left hand as he advanced playside; it might have provided just enough of a delay to help the guard.

very good analysis.

Yea, I didn't see the point of it either. From the 2 yard line why put in Taylor. Anyone should be able to figure out he's running. Fulmer NEVER has the gimmick qb pass.

Totally agree, that would be the thumb, index, and middle finger needed for the long ball and accuracy/velocity.

Not entirely true. You need the ring finger to provide a certain amount of stability. If he lost both the ring and pinky finger, the ball would come off his hand nearly sideways and spinning like a top.

I've already planned on doing a couple of home videos to demonstrate tackling and blocking. Maybe I can add this one to the queue.:p

I think a big reason as to why we didnt go long more is to keep the clock running and keep Cal's offense off the field. Now i would have like to see them give a long ball on occasion just to keep the safeties honest, and there was some passes that where threw short and HAD to be 10-12 yards.
