When the sheriff goes past the crime scene tape at the hotel in el paso, the bad dude is behind the door. He then disappears.
What did I miss? There is no back door and the sheriff walks through the room.

I didn't remember a confrontation between bell/chigurgh in the book ..

Explain: No Country for Old Men Did Anton Chigurh get the money? - Yahoo! Answers
No, Chigurh was NOT actually in the hotel room when the Sheriff Bell showed up. That flash of Chigurh you see behind the door was a *symbol* of what was going through the sheriff's mind. Chigurh was NOT in the room. (If you read the book, you'll find out that Chigurh was actually sitting in a car in the parking lot, because the sheriff just missed him in the room by *seconds*. If he *had* walked in on Chigurh, he would have been a dead man. ) The image you see of Chigurh in the room was actually what the sheriff was imagining *could* be waiting for him in that room. For the first time in his career, he is really and truly afraid. You see him draw his weapon before he goes in, and he's never done that before. (Earlier in the film, he even laughs at his deputy for drawing his weapon before going into Llewelyn's trailer.) Chigurh really got to him mentally.

If you enjoy reading, check out the book.

I gotta get my hands on more Cormac McCarthy. I read both The Road and No Country on separate flights from Atlanta to Salt Lake. Can't put the books down, and they only take like 4 hours to read.

I don't read many books of this type. I have a little flight coming up and may get one. Which one should I read?

I read the Road before I saw it. It's much better than the movie, and devastatingly depressing, but so good at the same time.

No Country For Old Men varies little from the movie. I saw the movie first and cannot decide which I like more. The dialog is so brilliant.

Can't go wrong with either one. I got my bro-in-law The Road for his birthday and I could tell he didn't like my description of it. He told me it went untouched for about a year, and then he picked it up and read it in 2 nights. He doesn't read much, either.
