Something that has always bugged me, and that many people have forgotten, is that with a little over 10 minutes left in the fourth quarter, and trailing by a touchdown, Tennessee had the ball first and goal on the LSU four yard line. Despite having one of the best offensive lines in the country and an All American running back, Tennessee threw the ball three straight times. After failing to score a touchdown, they had to settle for a field goal, which cut the lead to 24–20. I know Tennessee stopped LSU on the ensuing drive, and had a chance to take the lead before Stallworth fumbled the ball, but I’ve always felt that if they had tied the game at 24–24, they would have found a way to win.
Well, UT was not able to run against LSU, in either game. It probably wasn’t the right call to throw 3 straight passes, but throwing the ball is what sparked momentum on that drive.

I was on St. Simons Island playing in a rugby tournament that day. Went to the social after the tournament and could not believe my eyes. There was no way LSU could be beating us. We won the tournament, but that loss put a damper on the evening.

You keep talking about road wins.. Are you not also saying that he was bad at home?

Being clutch isn’t someone who has to play from behind against inferior competition. It never has been.
You have to be high...when did he have to play from behind vs inferior competition?

UT has not had a more clutch QB than Casey Clausen when you look at it.

He was 2nd to Peyton stat wise alltime and that's WITH missing several games with a broken collarbone (which he played 3 with)

He had several high quality wins and constantly made important key plays himself and carried the team on his back (Bama 4th and 19, Florida Hail Mary, etc)

He had an outstanding record, and was a true gritty leader.

You must either be too young or too uniformed

I was in school when Clausen was. I remember the games very well.

The guy had NFL starting receivers, NFL HOF TE, and NFL running backs, but couldn’t move the ball down the field until our offensive line wore out the other team’s defense. He was behind the wheel of a Formula 1 car, struggling to stay ahead of Chargers and Camaros. The only reason UT’s 2001 team isn’t considered one of NCAA’s all time teams is undeniably related to Casey Clausen.

If you can’t see it, I can’t go back and watch it for you.

Literally no one who actually knows football believes this.

He couldn't move the ball downfield? but was the 2nd best QB statistically of all time?

If it wasn't for Clausen directly we would've lost:

2000 - Bama, South Carolina, Memphis, Vandy
2001 - LSU, Alabama, South Carolina, Notre Dame, Kentucky, Florida
2002 - Arkansas
2003 - Florida, Alabama, Miami

34-9 as a starter, the only reason 2001's team isn't the best of all time is because of coaching

Probably the worst loss during Fulmer’s tenure. There was so much riding on that game.
Man I don't know. I know a lot of poeple will point to Wyoming but I will never forget them giving up against Florida in 07. Hefney literally stopped in the middle a play and watched it happen. 59-20 and it could have been so much worse. Our lineman was photographed on the ground trying to un-tie a Florida players shoes. It was gross to watch.

Wrong. Kiffen is a very good coach, when he avgs 10 wins at Ole Miss, that speaks for itself. Mediocre?????
check out his schedule....8-12 vs ranked teams... Powderpuff OOC schedule...same amount of wins as David Cutcliffe at Ole miss

We were playing for a title against LSU and the 2001 team was arguably Fulmer’s most talented roster. Nothing was on the line against Wyoming and we still made it to ATL despite getting demolished by UF in 07.

I knew we were going to lose as I was down at the Georgia Convention Center before the game enjoying the festivities and people were selling orange roses celebrating going to the Rose Bowl, and I had a very sinking feeling of really really bad karma. I was like WHY WHY would you do that??? sure enough after seeing some of the second half got up out of my seat and said.... peace out and it just got worse from there.

I often think about this game for many reasons. It marked a turning point in my life. I was at the game with my dad, who passed away about two years later. I was 16 at the time. For me, it was both a turning point and the beginning of UT football’s long decline into irrelevance. In so many ways, it parallels my own life.

I’m 40 now, and the game still comes to mind during make-or-break moments. What went wrong that night? We were the better team. LSU’s quarterback got hurt, and it felt impossible that we could lose. Then, suddenly, we started making mistakes. I remember the Stevens fumble as an absolute gut punch — something we didn’t deserve, but that the universe seemed determined to deal us anyway. We should never have lost that game. I remember the look on Savana face as if his body language was saying “I stole that one, and I know I stole that one”. It marked Saban’s true ascendency and Fulmer’s actual decline. We still should have never lost that game.

To me, it was a sliding-doors moment in the history of our program. That game became symbolic of life itself: bad things will happen to you beyond your control, and you’ll have no choice but to endure them. From there, we drifted into twenty years of doldrums. I’ve often felt bitter about that night, still believing that if we had won, we would have gone on to the Rose Bowl and claimed our second national title in three years. But fate wouldn’t allow it.

Being in that stadium during the fourth quarter, I had never felt so powerless and defeated. The worst part was how inevitable it all felt, as if destiny had already been written.

Hopefully we now have cleared out karmic debt, and can get back to the level we were at on that night. We were the best team in the land. Don’t let anyone ever tell you otherwise. We are close to it now.

Go Vols

lol. Some of you either have a huge delusion about the 2001 team or just have forgotten. We were not the best team in the nation. Not close IMO. Now I realize that some want to think that if we had beaten LSU and faced off against Miami that we would have stood a chance. No we wouldn’t have. Miami woild have beaten us like Nebraska did in 1997 or worse.
