Chavis's past defenses are described as "hard-working, aggressive, and fundamentally sound"....not in the past few years Scout.

Putting Gus Malzahn ahead of Monte Kiffin is simply ignorant.

I would go so far as to say it's asinine. And laughable. Not a lot of ways you can spin relative success at Tulsa to equal a Super Bowl ring and the invention of a widely-imitated defense.

He put together a pretty darn good teram last year. Chavis was a fantastic Defensive Coordinator.

I think Chavis gets a raw deal. He was literally the only bright spot in coaching during some of our worst seasons. Chavis was voted by other coaches, his peers(who know the game, live the game, and have a better understanding of the game than any of us) as the best Coordinator in the country. That was during one of our WORST seasons. The guy gets respect around the country. He put up one of the best defenses in the country last year. Chavis is nothing to sneeze at. He was a great coach for us while he was here.

Gentlemen, everything is OK. UCLA & Auburn both get to bring their sorry arses to K-Town this year. Don't tell me Lane doesn't know how/absolutely want to destroy the Bruins. As for Aubie, Gus and Gene had better bring more than their Cox if they want to survive....

Thank you for that insight. I have some concerns after reading some of you Vols making comments about everything is fine except for 3rd downs and the pass D not being up to snuff for past couple of years for you all. Last year in the Vols games I saw your D looked stout but was put in impossible situations due to TOs and poor Offensive execution.

What was bad about 3rd downs? Is it legit the negative I heard when Les hired Chavis that his Ds were soft vs short passes on 3rd? Or that you all gave up too many long completions on 3rd down?

It can't be anything worse than the disaster we had on D last year. Now that our Co-Morons are gone and the one year failed experiment is over with I am looking forward to having a real coordinator in the Chief. But, what are some of the drawbacks to his zone D us Tiger fans need to be aware of? All insights welcomed.

If it's 3rd and 7, your secondary will be playing 10 yards off.

If it's 3rd and 20, your secondary will be playing 25 yards off.

There were at least several games during Chavis' tenure where he played soft coverage(particularly on 3rd down) and it helped cost UT the game.

I'm sure this has been discussed, but you do know that like 5 teams we played were ranked 90 or lower in total offense. That is the biggest reason for our artificial defensive statistics.

Well, to be honest that was kind of like Pelini's D. It worked up until the second half of '07. But, I do prefer a more aggressive philosophy with less cushioning. Thanks for the news.

Then you'll cuss Chavis.

His defenses are fine as long as there are NFL quality DL.
