Has anyone heard from any Duck fans at the game on how loud Autzen is vs Neyland? I am curious since many Duck fans think (or thought) that their stadium is louder. I haven't seen anything on this so merge if necessary.

I too am curious to hear from the Ducks that made the trip what they thought of Neyland and Knoxville in general.

So, some ducks made their way into the student section at the game last night. Me and Matthew Sullivan ended up talking to them quite a bit through out the game. Really nice people. They were very, very impressed with Neyland! As was I, even tho I was not pleased with the pregame support yesterday but I got over that quickly when the stadium erupted at Kickoff. I did question them on how Neyland compared to Autzen. They made sure to say that Neyland was right there with Autzen and by far the best they had been to outside of Autzen. We discussed the stadium layout and how it had impact on the loudness. They made sure to tell us how small Autzen is and how that helps with the loudness of the stadium and its reputation. They mentioned that they had been to places such as Michigan and Purdue and that they did not compare to Neyland. Also they mentioned how great our fans were, how respectful and nice we were to them. They got a lot of #'s and are looking forward to paying the Vols fans back for the kindness and awesomeness when we travel to Eugene. They also got into Rocky Top and some of our other chants. They were there to take in the atmosphere for sure.

I hope (most) fellow Vol fans treated the Duck fans well. I mean it's not cheap to fly across the country and stay for a few days.. But I hope in the very least they got a glimpse of the traditions that we have. I like to think that our 100,000+ was atleast comparable to Autzen, atleast when we were winning/close.

I met some really nice Duck fans over the weekend. All really respectful. I'm hoping to meet up with a few in 2012.

I asked a few people that went to the game, they basically said that Neyland wasn't quite as loud as Autzen, but they probably were not hearing Neyland at its loudest either.

Sometimes whether plays a big factor in acoustics. The USC-Oregon Halloween night game was by far the craziest I've seen (for obvious reasons), but it actually wasn't as loud as the early September games like Oklahoma or Michigan. People wear gloves which dampens a lot of clapping, and I'm sure a physicist could explain sound waves and how they change with air density/temperature.

I guess we'll just have to wait to 2013 to hear both sides of the story though.

Thats funny, after the rain delay we got multiple ducks thrown out of the student section

Volguess06, we were in K tho. all the way behing the goal post. yeah, all of the Ducks i met were really respectful. Like bigtime said, they were impressed by the grand scale of Neyland. THey said that they only reason that Autzen was louder was because how it was smaller and all the noise went directly to the field, where like Neyland some of the noise goes up. Really enjoyed talking to them and comparing programs.

I think the team on the field can go a long way towards how the fans cheer. In other words, how much do you have to cheer for? Is it a team with high expectations or a team trying to make a bowl game? Oregon has potential NC hopes as well as Pac - ? Champ hopes. UT is down, thus Neyland won't be quite as loud as it was in years past, but still a factor to reckon with imo. If we start winning, consistently, look for Neyland to wake up.

Thanks for the input. I know the student section is was loud, but it's hard to truly gauge how loud it is. The USCe game last year was crazy. As was the UGA game. Most of the Duck fans I encountered were nice. I also had the pleasure of explaining the Vol Walk and other traditions to an older couple. I was also pleased by the number of people who came back after the rain delay. It didn't appear that many seats opened up.

IMO I think that the crowd did a damn fine job in the first half the ducks got some false starts a couple of times etc. We need to get after it next week as well!!!!

Talking to folks who were there, they were very impressed with the enormity of the stadium, the traditions, singing, etc. The ones who were in the crowd, said they thought during the time when things were going UT's way, it seemed very similar to Autzen noise levels. However, I've heard from two folks who had access to the field (who also do at Autzen) and they said it was loud, but not Autzen loud, at field level.

As some have mentioned, I'd say that this is more a consequence of stadium design/acoustics, than it is of a measurable difference in fan enthusiasm.

I talked to a few very respectful Oregon fans while tailgating and they said that everyone had been respectful and they were having a great time. I also ran into a guy at Tin Roof and he said "Your stadium reps hard!" He said the fans were respectful and we had a great atmosphere. I didn't ask whether Neyland was better or not but I assumed that would be a question answered in by the color shapes you are wearing. Also, it is hard to tell the volume of the stadium from the stands. I was sitting outside the student section for the first time in a long time since I just graduated. It was much louder there than I can remember from when I was younger, but it is nothing compared to the student section. Where you are sitting plays a large part into how loud it seems and your only true measure is to hear it from the field...

I didn't make it to the game this week but from what I heard by watching it on tv, it sounded as if the crowd was really loud and doing a good job backing our vols up until it got outta hand. It looked like Oregon was having trouble with play calls for a while. I'll be attending the Florida game and I'm gonna do my best to be as loud as I possibly can.

I'd say it's important to talk to people who were in the lower bowl, possibly even right behind the visitor's sideline. Talking to people who were at the top by the scoreboard won't have gotten the full impact of the sound generated.

That being said, my guess is that Autzen was still louder

I was in Z-14 and struck up a conversation in our downtime with some nearby some Duck fans and they said it was very loud. Not as loud as Autzen but they were actually more impressed with the stadium as a whole.

One guy said "Autzen is loud because it's designed to be loud. Neyland is loud because the fans will it to be loud." That was in the 1st Quarter, though. The guy also said "I'd hate to hear how loud this place would be if UT was where they were 10 years ago". It wasn't a below-the-belt comment, it's actually a complement that we're (as a fanbase) still loyal and behind our team despite our overwhelming lack of success in recent years. Oregon fan said UT had the best fanbase he's seen so far, everything considered.

That fan was a good representation of the folks I had met (Sunspot, Vol Village and stadium) in that they were polite and even-keeled fans with some even seemingly in awe of UT.

More importantly than all of this is if the sound affects anything. It didn't, so it doesn't really matter. We had more false start penalties than they did, if I'm not mistaken.

Reminds me of the time I sat with another Vol fan in the midst of Wash. St. fans when they beat us like 56-28 or something. They were very nice. At first they really cheered loudly...but they would look at us and say "sorry"....sometimes. They actually got quiet as the score became ridiculous and looked at us like we were lost children or something. I know they were just trying not to rub it in. They also bragged and bragged on everything that goes on on game day at UT long before the game was out of hand. The stunner was that so many of the people in that section made it a point to shake our hand and offer refreshments during the game.

I've had similar things happen with many UCLA fans.

Sound didn't phase Oregon as much because they have hand signals that they use all the time anyway...

Funny thing is, so many of our fans were told that by Oregon fans on here, yet nobody thought it was a good idea to believe what they were saying
