Just wondering what everyone thinks about next years team. I think we have the POTENTIAL to be a decent team.

OFFENSE:
If Ainge gets his head on straight or Crompton comes through then we will be ok at QB. We will have talent at RB(probably gonna bring in one of the top backs in the country) and OL. We will have depth at WR if they can just learn to catch. Decent depth overall on this side of the ball.

DEFENSE:
Secondary will probably be the strength of our D. Everyone that is starting this year except for Stewart will be back. We could very possibly lose our entire front 7 if Harrell decides to go pro so this will be an area for concern. We have decent depth at end with Mitchell and Reynolds. We have McBride at Tackle along with Bolden and Raymond Henderson. We have talent along the DL, just unproven. Year in and year out we always have good LBs no matter how talented they are so I am not really concerned about that.

OVERALL:
I expect us to compete for a SEC East title and will probably finish about 9-2 and probably end up in the Capital One Bowl.

yeah stewart will be back for sure next year! The secondary is going to be raw! Linebackers and DL is the real concern... more so im concerned with the LB's the only few that makes me halfway think positive would be jerod mayo and marvin mitchell.

I really dont think we will be better next year.

This wasn't a rebuilding year. Our best players are graduating (Allen, Malehona, Riggs, Paralson, Simon, Gaither).

I think next year is going to be dismal, and we may see some real change in Knoxville at the end of it.

I believe the Vols will be in the hunt for the NC next year. The defense won't be AS good as this years version but it will be loaded. The D-Line will be as deep as it was in 98 and can be just as good. The main thing lost from the line backing corp will be speed. But there are some MONSTERS waiting to get a shot. The secondary will return intact and could be even better next year with Morley playing full time. As far as the offense nothing will change if they don't re-establish the dominant run game of the past. That will be very possible with solid players at every position up front.

Hate to see Omar, Simon, J Mitchell go at LB. But im pretty optimistic about, Mayo, McCoy, Mathis, Karl, Wilson, M Mitchell next season. With a decent shot at signing a 3-4 star stud this Feb.

overall the talent next year we put on the field will probably not be as good as this years team, but close. we will beat florida and alabama, but lose to cal, lsu, georgia, and a surprise team. 7-4 to the peach bowl.

can't stand randy sander's or any of the offensive coaches, except for taylor. we could improve with coaching changes, but i don't think that will happen. fulmer would have to admit he was wrong it won't happen.

We're playing Cal next year? I thought it was '07-'08.

Anyways, the offense should be better. But I agree with oklavol, this was supposed to be the year to shine. The talent on this team is second in the country only to USC's. Add to that every single other team in the SEC has a glaring, exploitable weakness and Fulmer should have been able to march through and at least take the SEC East. We might do well next season, but I doubt it. And even if we do, achieving when you're not supposed to and not achieving when you are supposed to is a bad spot to be in.

The defense should be okay for the next few years at least. But every other part of Tennessee football needs renovated.

i agree. sanders is doing a less than desirable job, but people act like the offense revolves around play-calling like there are no other factors.

well i think it's a combination of a QB with no arm strength to spread the field, crappy play calling, predictable play calling, execution( but even if we execute the plays perfect i think we will be hard pressed to get 21 points. ) i also believe though fulmer is calling atleast 50% of the plays that is the reason he stands by sanders.

As I gaze through my orange colored crystal ball, I see vast improvement. Pat Ryan returns as OC and the Big Orange run up the score on the likes of Ga, Fla and Bama! Its unbelievable! However, Ryan is called back to the Jets when Chad and Vinny are injuried and we drop 2 of our last 4 and get drilled 3-0 by the high octane Neb offense in the Who Cares Bowl!

Its a little early to start looking towards next season... what with the oppty to still finish this season with 9 wins.... but I thought it would be fun to see who the Vols have coming back (starters listed.. min. 1 start):

DEFENSE
Losing starters (6): DE Parys Haralson, DT Jesse Mahelona, DE Jason Hall, LB Omar Gaither, LB Kevin Simon, LB Jason Mitchell,

Returning starters (7): DT Justin Harrell, LB Jerod Mayo, CB Jonathan Wade, CB Inqy Johnson, CB Roshaun Fellows, FS Jonathan Hefney, SS Antwan Stewart

Other contributors:
DB Corey Campbell (1 interception)
DT Turk McBride (1.5 tfl, 0.5 sacks)
DE Xavier Mitchell (1.5 tfl, 1.5 sacks)
DE Antonio Reynolds
LB Marvin Mitchell
DB Demetrice Morely
DT Tony McDaniel
LB Ryan Karl

OFFENSE
Losing starters (7): QB Rick Clausen, RB Gerald Riggs, C Richie Gandy, RG Cody Douglas, RT Albert Toeaina, WR Chris Hannon, WR CJ Fayton

Returning starters (10): QB Erik Ainge, RB Arian Foster, TE Chris Brown, LT/LG Arron Sears, LT Eric Young, LG/C Rob Smith, C Anthony Parker, WR Bret Smith, WR Jason Swain, FB Cory Anderson

Other contributors:
WR Robert Meachem (4th on team in receptions and yardage)
RB M. Hardesty
RB David Yancy
WR Josh Briscoe

SPECIAL TEAMS
Returning:
PR/KR Lucas Taylor
K James Wilhoit
P Britton Colquitt

Note: I went ahead and added Arian Foster as a starter knowing that he gets his first start this week against South Carolina.

I think the Vols have enough talent to be very good on defense next season. However, I do not think they will be as good as this season.. but they will be very good.

For young players, experience is key. The Vols return no less than 10 players on offense that have at least 1 start.

Alot of how a team plays is chemistry. Team chemistry changes each season as old players leave and new players come in. Apparantly, the team chemistry on offense changed over the past season. One poster listed the offensive yardage from last season. However, the biggest difference is not the yardage but the points. The offense in 2004 scored enough points to win 10 games. Sometimes not pretty, but they scored. The 2005 offense struggles to score, even when they are inside the 10-yard line. I look for the team chemistry on offense to change for the better in 2006. A leader will need to emerge, much like Tee Martin, who can take over a game in the clutch and score some points.
