What new traditions do you think Kiffin & Co. will implement if any. Keep in mind, traditions as great as the ones we have, they were at one point not traditions. Do you think that if message boards were around years and years ago that people would've said that running through a "T" onto the field would've NOT fit the UT tradition standards?

So keep this trivia question below in mind when people start talking about adding new traditions to the already great ones that exist. Where would we be without Dickey as far as traditions go? If you look at that list, he changed a lot in one season!

Question

What Tennessee Coach started his tenure at Tennessee by swapping the home bench from east side to west side, putting T's on the helmets, painting the endzones, and running through a 50 yard T.

Answer Choices

Phillip Fulmer
Johnny Majors
Doug Dickey
Gen. Robert Neyland

I'd be happy with a winning tradition.:p

Maybe have coaches' wives lead the run through the T?

How about giving the hardest working defensive player/linebacker jersey number.... such as (insert player here) the Al Wilson award and jersey number. Same thing could be done on offense.

I agree, beating the hated two on a regular basis would be nice. About the only thing I really want to keep is the running through the "T". To me, that is one of the best traditions in college football.

I never understood why Tennessee's home bench is not on the press box side?
It used to be. When we beat Florida in '90, I had really low seats right behind the Florida bench. A couple of years later (I can't remember exactly) they moved the Vols in front of the students. I think it may have something to do with the opposing team being abused by the student section.

Edit: At least I would have sworn to this...

I like the idea of a special jersey # to a player that "earns it" the previous year... I believe USC does this for their LB's... I think it's their #55 jersey... It is a USC tradition, so maybe that'll carry over from CPC to CLK...

Bring back the TN walking horse. Just picture the T is formed, at the top of the T is Davy on the horse, he fires his gun and the team takes the field.

You are right. The opposing bench can not be in front of the student section. It is referred to as the "Florida rule."

I'm pretty sure that's right. I think I read it in an old SI article that was specifically talking about college football student sections, and that they had to move ours because of that.:bad:

edit: ya'll beat me to it.

You're correct. I grew up sitting behind the UT bench on the press box side. It got pretty chilly in the late afternoons but it was better than having the sun in your eyes.

That is exactly right. Just before the game, a UF student died (murdered if I remember correctly) and there was a "real" student section behind the visitor bench back then. Over the course of the game, some drunk and disorderly students kept yelling "at least our students don't die" to the Florida team. The benches were then switched for the next game and have remained that way since.

A lot of traditions evolve over time too. I imagine most of the things Kiffin might change will likely deal with discipline of which we've seen some already. He has also stated that he's not the most knowledgeable Vol out there so I wouldn't expect him to show up on the field with any drastic changes to gameday events/ceremony this year. He'll want to be at Neyland during a game at least once prior to that.

If you change up too much early on (outside actual football gameplay) you'll make more people mad than you will happy.

Oh I am sorry, this was a thread about new traditions. I thought having black would be a NEW tradition.
