I would not trade my laptop for anything. It depends on what you use it for though. If you are into gaming or any other cpu intensive apps I would go with a desktop. If not I would get a laptop.

the main things we need one for is school work/research, visiting websites/recreation(volboards)/chatting, and downloading videos/music. would a laptop be suitable for this?

what are some nice laptops in my price range? there is an xps that i was looking at for $999 that i like, but i dont know about computers and it may suck.

I'm getting a Toshiba Satellite series notebook for Christmas. They're good and mostly around $1000.

I hate lap tops cause if you want to upgrade them in the future it's going to cost a lot more then a desktop. If you don't take it anywhere, you can get more power for less money with a desktop.

And i have fat fingers and it's real hard to type on laptops...

I have both and use my PC for the resource intensive stuff and the laptop for "surfing" - videos and music are a pc application - you can get a lot more memory and like RTE said - future upgrades at a better price with the PC.

The speed at which PC hardware is changing has slowed to a crawl... I bought a $500 Acer at Circuit City over the Summer and now only use my desktop for D/L, encoding video, hardcore games, and burning DVDs. My super cheap laptop has become my prime machine over my much more powerful desktop.

I got a Dell Inspiron 9300, but I wish I had went after the Dell XPS. Both laptops of course.
