I am finding it lighter and better cushioned than the 992. The stability and support feels about the same but I am a bit concerned that the heel absorption design is not going to last nearly as long as the previous styles'. Guess I'm just used to a more substantial (i.e. "clunkier") shoe.

For the issues he is addressing I would also look at the brooks trance or the saucony hurricane. I am flat footed and the stability and cushioning in both are wonderful for me. Both have lasted a long time as well.

didn't like the hurricane and have never tried the trance. I'm pretty much exclusively the gel kayano at this point.

I love the kayano but the styling on them doesn't suit me. I wear the hurricane as an everyday type shoe and run in the trance. The trance has a lot more stability than any shoe I have ever worn.

I didn't even know they still made Brooks! What stores carry them? I had a pair that lasted me forever in the Marine Corps! I loved those shoes! My problem is I'm bow legged and I wear the hell out of the outside heel.

Has anyone tried those shoes that look like gloves on your feet? I think they are called Vibrams and a lot of people were using them for the Big Sur Marathon.

oh, the kayano is ugly as a bowling shoe, but I just run in 'em.

fwiw, I stopped by today at a local running store because my Trances aren't far from being put out to pasture. I ahve the 7s and I knew the 8s had already been released. I trust the guy from experience and he thought the 8s were so bad for a stability and support shoe that he actually sent them back and refuses to carry them. I am now pondering the Mizuno Nirvanas.

Those are the Five Fingers with Viabrim soles. I bought a pair at the outdoor clotheir on Monteagle. Supposedly the glove style fit improves balance but I never found that to be the case. The sole provides hardly any support if you are on a hard surface. Also, the shoes do not come in every size. They are sized sort of like socks so if you wear a size 11, for example, the shoe you will be offered fits maybe sizes 10-13. I gave the Five Fingers a fair trial but just didn't like them so I took them down to Florida for use solely as beach shoes. Unfortunately, they are not the greatest beach shoes either because the low cut allows water and, therefore, sand and other stuff, to get inside the shoe. I would avoid these shoes unless you are just looking for something only to wear in dry sand.

I figured you for a P.F. Flyer kind of guy :)

Crap - I just looked them up and they are selling new versions - will the retro nostalgia never end?

BTW, thanks for the suggestions on Brooks Beast. I wear 4Es and have found Saucony and Asics extra wides to pinch a bit. When I was younger I would buy into the salesmen's line about breaking in the shoe and squeeze my foot into the widest thing the shoestore offered, but have since learned that the shoe must feel perfect the first time put it on.
