you want klunky, get the brooks beast.I am finding it lighter and better cushioned than the 992. The stability and support feels about the same but I am a bit concerned that the heel absorption design is not going to last nearly as long as the previous styles'. Guess I'm just used to a more substantial (i.e. "clunkier") shoe.
didn't like the hurricane and have never tried the trance. I'm pretty much exclusively the gel kayano at this point. For the issues he is addressing I would also look at the brooks trance or the saucony hurricane. I am flat footed and the stability and cushioning in both are wonderful for me. Both have lasted a long time as well.

oh, the kayano is ugly as a bowling shoe, but I just run in 'em.I love the kayano but the styling on them doesn't suit me. I wear the hurricane as an everyday type shoe and run in the trance. The trance has a lot more stability than any shoe I have ever worn.

Has anyone tried those shoes that look like gloves on your feet? I think they are called Vibrams and a lot of people were using them for the Big Sur Marathon.
I didn't even know they still made Brooks! What stores carry them? I had a pair that lasted me forever in the Marine Corps! I loved those shoes! My problem is I'm bow legged and I wear the hell out of the outside heel.
BTW, thanks for the suggestions on Brooks Beast. I wear 4Es and have found Saucony and Asics extra wides to pinch a bit. When I was younger I would buy into the salesmen's line about breaking in the shoe and squeeze my foot into the widest thing the shoestore offered, but have since learned that the shoe must feel perfect the first time put it on.
