Foster ready to prove himself all over again - SEC - ESPN

Really good read about his drop in stock and how he plans to fix it once he's at the next level.

by Chris Low
The NFL is about proving yourself all over again.

For former Tennessee All-SEC tailback Arian Foster, it will also be about building back his reputation.

Foster is the exception to the rule that says going back to college for your senior season is usually the wisest choice. He received a second-round grade from the NFL draft advisory committee last year, but elected to return to school for his final season.

"I saw the talent we had returning, and I honestly thought we could win an SEC championship," Foster explained. "That's what was missing in my college career, and that's what brought me back. We were so close the year before. I wanted another shot at it."

What he got was a shot to his draft stock and a sobering reminder of how quickly things can turn in the SEC.

The Vols suffered through a dismal 5-7 season, which led to Phillip Fulmer's firing. Foster, who was just 685 yards away from becoming Tennessee's all-time rushing leader heading into the season, never meshed with new offensive coordinator Dave Clawson, and Foster finished with 570 rushing yards and one touchdown on 131 carries.

great read... he caught a bad break for sure. If only the ball wasn't greased...

He can be taught how to hold onto the ball. The coaching regime he had at UT did not bother to teach that. He has the talent and physical ability to be a good NFL player.

Where did this bad character guy label come from about him, this is the first that i am hearing about it. I do not feel he split the locker room like a TO could here with the Cowboys but who knows.

As expected he didn't tear up the 40 (which was run at San Diego State's Pro Day by the way) with a 4.69. That's pretty pedestrian but it is worth noting that names like Jevon Ringer and Knowshon Moreno didn't get under 4.6 at the Combine. Foster's 3 Cone time of 7.09 did show more than respectable change of direction ability.

He's no first rounder but he might make it in the right system. He's got decent size, shown a degree of durability and can catch the ball out of the backfield. I hope he makes it somewhere.

I am with you on this one. Reading this was very suprising.

With the success that Carolina, Titans and some other teams had with two backs, I think you have a good point. It seems NFL teams are looking for two backs with different skills. I doubt he would fit in with a player like Westbrook.

On most teams he would've been a FB...I've always thought thats where he should play. IMO he would've been a great FB.

I could see Foster being the bruiser to JAX's Jones-Drew. Now they Taylor is gone, they still need the 3rd down back, and Foster could break out for them.

the only bruising arian foster does is the bruising to his knees when he falls down after you touch his shoe string.

i never knew about any of this stuff about him being a problem in the locker room either.

And who cares that he fumbled once his junior year if he fumbled multiple times his senior year?

Only 1 touchdown the entire season? Man, that's even worse than I remember it being! Is that right?

Well, when you consider that the entire team only scored 26 TD's (that's rushing and receiving) and add in the fact that Hardesty kinda took over the GL scenarios it really isn't that big a shock.

I'm a big Iggles fan, so I would love to see him wearing green on Sundays. He would make a good backup for Westbrook, especially since they lost Buckhalter and Booker is trash.

I would think Greg Jones would be their bruiser. If they need a running back that can catch, they won't find one better than Jones-Drew.

They probably get Knowshon or Wells or someone else much better than Foster.

did he participate in ut's pro day? or was he still injured with the hammy.

I'm not certain of the "why" but no, he participated in Sand Diego State's Pro Day. He's from San Diego and maybe just wanted to stay close to home.
