Okay, I just found out about this thing called a Powerpak that you can buy and download games onto it and play it in your NES. That sounds completely awesome, and now I need one.

Does anyone know how these things work? And are they legal?

Haven't heard of it, but I know there are tons of NES ROMS available on the internet. I doubt it's legal but I'm sure it's not uncommon. Makes me wonder if I still have an NES stored away somewhere.

While cool indeed, it's not worth it when you can just buy an adapter for the NES controller and play ROMS on your PC, Phone, or Tablet. Last time I looked it was upwards of $150.

I've heard that playing ROMs on the CPU there is a delay between touching the button and the character reacting, and it really affects the game play in a negative way.

I wouldn't play Roms on a tablet or smartphone. Touchscreens don't work well with old NES games that required precision (Mario, Zelda, Mega Man, etc). They work fine with old turn based RPGs though (Final Fantasy, Dragon Quest, etc).

Using a usb NES controller on my PC emulator has never given me any problems. In fact it may be more responsive than the original. Even if you do die or make a mistake, most emulators have rewind options to save you those precious lives.

If you have a 3DS, you can purchase a DSTWO online that allows you to emulate many classic games on your 3DS. I have an NES, SNES, Gameboy, Gameboy Advance, Sega Genesis, and Nintendo DS currently running on my 3DS using Roms and emulation.

While I agree I wouldn't play them on a smartphone(although there are ways to use a controller on a smartphone), a tablet is fine because you can just buy a usb NES controller and use that.

I'm also fairly certain you can get NES, SNES, and N64 ROMS to work on a Wii rather easily and it has its own controller adapters.

I think any option is better and more cost effective than buying the Powerpak that uses the old NES console. Especially considering the price. If it were $20 I'd say go for it, but the guy is just overcharging tremendously. It's going to cost at least $150 just for the hardware, that's not counting shipping/customs cost.

Yep, you can use some controllers in tablets and phones! And I think you're correct about modding the Wii. The Wii and Wii U are the only Nintendo consoles I haven't owned, so I don't know much besides they have some nice Virtual Console classics!
