If Pearl wants to have any success here then he better stop trashing the city and the society here. His tactics might work elsewhere but you cant tell inner city kids you want to take them out of the 'hood to help them out. These kids dont want to hear that.

He also used the murder of Lorenzen Wright as a recruiting tool. Thats not cool on any levels.

I was born in Memphis and as a whole the city sucks, though I do like going back to visit and then getting the eff out.

So it's a bad thing to want to get kids out of the 'hood?

That point can be argued. Im just saying that coming into the city and telling kids that have grown up there that they need to be taken out of their comfort zone to help them out is a bad recruiting tactic. Im not saying that its bad for them, Im just saying its a bad idea if you want recruits to leave and come to Knoxville.

Bruce has stepped on a lot of toes here in the prep scene. He has a few friends as well.

Um, really? If you really think Pearl is telling kids this, you have some problems to figure out. He is doing FINE in Memphis. He's on top of Adonis Thomas, and he's already got Chris Jones. Both are ballers.

Thanks for your informative response. Im sure you did plenty of research to formulate such an intelligent answer.

and you come to bash our coach with very limited info as well. Are you surprised when people don't take your thread seriously?

You have 29 posts and only started posting here after the self-imposed sanctions were released. It's obvious you're a troll so intelligence doesn't apply here. Telling you to zip it is the most fair thing to do...

Chris Jones is an outstanding athlete. Pearl did a good job with him. As far as being "on top of Adonis", I beg to differ. Jermaine Johnson (head coach at Melrose) is a Vol guy and had a lot to do with channeling Jones to Knoxville. Its a good fit for both player and school. Adonis is a different story. His decision will ultimately come down to Memphis and one other school, likely Florida due to the academic standard there.

Pearl has only gotten one player from Memphis since his tenure began. Considering all of the D1 talent that has come from this city, I would consider that "Doing fine" either.

If it doesn't work in inner-city Memphis I don't know where it would work... maybe Detroit?

I personally like Pearl. I think he has done a great job in what was originally a difficult situation (Football school with limited basketball history and a strong Womens program). He managed to bring life to the program in a short time and has made the UTK/Memphis games the pinnacle of my basketball season to watch. I have nothing against Pearl. Actually, if you looked at my posts on my home message board, you'll find I was s supporter of Pearl when he was rumored for the Memphis job.

Look we have more national exposure than Memphis. That is a fact.

Pastner is a wunderkid and I am impressed with him so far. If his formidable recruiting haul does not turn into great results this year, he will be wounded.

Also when TN keeps beating Memphis, it makes Memphis kids want to check out what TN has.

Finally, there are much hotter girls in Knoxville willing to get with the basketball players than the girls in Memphis who are looking to get pregnant and get their check.

The men from Memphis know that the pastures there are not green...

I don't see using getting them out of the hood as a negative recruiting tool. Getting out of the "'hood" is akin to winning the lottery.

the problem is that most of them dont want "out of the hood" despite how much better it might be.

How are those things not relevant? You are only hurt by them because you are a Tiger fan. Memphis has a crime problem that especially affects those in the inner city. Maybe you've heard. You don't have to trash the city to realize that some guys need a change to scenery to flourish. There are plenty of bad neighborhoods that perpetuate a culture of failure. A very small percentage of these guys will ever get close to the NBA.

In which case it won't work. I don't really want more gang members trolling my campus. I'd much prefer the guy who can see past his own ignorance to make a better life for himself than someone who is afraid to break the cycle of going nowhere in life.

Youre right, the city itself has a crime problem. If youre going to use that recruiting tactic then you might need to keep your own current players out of trouble right? I talk to these kids on occasion and Im just offering some insight. I dont know why Pearl uses this tactic. A lot of other coaches are successful within the city from far off universities and they seldom use this.
