My work PC is driving me insane.

(Dell XPS Pentium D 3g with 3g of ram)

It's keeps freezing periodically for about 3 to 5 seconds and for a CAD operator that is H..L!!! I can type a entire sentence set back and then watch it appear one by one.
  • No virus I have scanned plenty of times (every night)
  • It has been defragged
  • scanned for malicious and spyware
  • I've even cleaned all temp files and cookies out
  • I still have plenty of storage space (100g)
I'm starting to think the hard drive is going bad.

Some Gaming Mod you are. Everyone knows in this situation you blow on it and if that doesnt work you go get a newer better one.

Could be the drive. Could be a printer or something that is having problems and causing a system interrupt problem.

Drive making noises? Usually starts to click in stuations like this as the heads try to find the information they need.

I've already open the case trying to hear something coming from the HD, but everything sounds fine. :banghead2:

I seem to have a similar issue sometimes when I have Outlook open. I have tons of saved emails so that could have something to do with it but I'm not sure. My system locks up for about 5 seconds and the cpu is maxed. I can't seem to find out the guilty party for sure but I really think it's Outlook.

I know you have 3 gigs of ram, but how much of it is being used up by system processes and unnecessary programs running in resident memory (lower right of the task bar)?

Is the CPU on a power saving mode? Desktop processors can throttle back to a lower speed just like their laptop cousins.

Have you recently changed graphics cards? Graphics drivers rarely uninstall completely and any trace of the old drivers, even if you stayed with the same company (ati, nvidia, etc) will cause instability in some way.

Process delay... hmmmm... your pagefile could also be too large, causing the lag.

I can tell you a surefire solution. Backup all pertinent information and reformat/reinstall. :) That's usually my answer to everything, but it also fixes most everything.

That said, I know it is easier said than done, and often takes hours to get the machine back in shape.

I don't think you have enough RAM to run your programs. Can you add RAM to your motherboard, do you have slots?

You didn't mention this, but you need a firewall, most people have them, you probably do as well. Its as important as virus protection.

If its really bothering you, try flattening your machine as well. Uninstall all your programs and reinstall windows. If that doesn't fix it time for a new computer.
