NCAA settles NIL driven lawsuit with UT

The NCAA has been working itself out of relevance for decades. It desperately needs to reorganize to dedicate itself "to helping college students develop leadership, confidence, discipline and teamwork through sports," its self-professed mission.

It's incorrect how everyone blames the NCAA for the current mess.

As soon as NIL became a reality via the courts, who set up the collectives to essentially pay the players to play? The NCAA? No...... the schools.

Who sued the NCAA to open up transfers? The schools.

UT is the problem for fans, not the NCAA.

The NCAA has neen so inconsistent on levying penalties or making a player wait too long to make an eligibility determination, among other things, that I simply don't care if they get scorched. I'm with the schools when its against the NCAA, on anything. That said, schools will need to figure a lot of things out going forward to keep college football from becoming a has-been.

Yes, but when the NCAA is gone the courts will likely not allow another "amateur" setup. The Supreme Court said clearly the business model is in violation of Antitrust Laws.

Killing the NCAA will mean replacing it with a pro organization. You'd like that better?

And still, UT has taken EVERY opportunity to destroy NIL rules and transfer rules, which all of us hate to see happen. UT is not on the side of the fans in this.

Absolutely. Who sued to get NIL rules completely destroyed. It's in the original post. TN sued, no doubt at the request of UT.

Who sued to get multi transfers with no penalties. TN joined that lawsuit also and no doubt at the request of UT.

So you like those things? NIL chaos and unlimited free agency? UT via the State of TN appears to like those things.

NCAA Sat on their ass & did nothing so the courts took over. Then they tried to selectively enforce the old rules. NCAA is getting what they deserve.

BTW, NcAA President Charlie Baker, as governor of Massachusetts, misappropriated Fed Covid money. Now Mass is subject to a huge “claw back” that will take years to repay. Sounds just like the guy to do what’s right for college athletics.

The NCAA had ZERO choice. They couldn't bust the cherry just a little on NIL. It doesn't work like that and they knew it. They knew once it was open, it was going to be fully open.

The same with transfers. Once it was open, they knew they'd be sued out of existence trying to regulate it.

I PROMISE the next organization won't make you any happier. At least the NCAA kinda exists as amateur ball. The next organization won't be an amateur setup (at least at UT's level) so the NCAA SUCKS....... but they are the only thread we've got to prevent pro status.

"Amateur" is how the NCAA misspelled "exploitation".

As for Charlie Baker, of course he's corrupt. He's a politician and the only hope for the NCAA is to get the corrupt DC politicians to save it via Antitrust Exemptions. When you need to deal with scum, scum is who you hire to get it done.

Most of this crap came to a head in the previous 10 years when Emmert ran the NCAA. Baker is the virtual criminal who needs to make a deal with the virtual criminals in DC to keep amateur ball in college.

Why do you want to return college sports to the bad old days of exploiting the athletes?

I didn't say that. I said they had no choice but to fight it because they knew legally they were screwed.

My issue is that everyone goes after the players and the NCAA when it's OBVIOUSLY the schools, like UT, that are doing everything they can to change college ball into pro ball.

I think it's inevitable and legally correct but it sucks on a lot of traditional levels AND 1000 YESES....... the old way was illegal and unfair to the players.

Just, if the fans don't like it and many don't, blame the right people for it: the big revenue schools like UT want EXACTLY what we're seeing in college sports. That's all.

The schools didn't do it. The athletes and the courts did it. I'm not blaming the athletes. They are finally getting their due.

I blame the schools and the NCAA. Not for done imaginary "trying to make it pro ball", but for ever having that illegal model, supporting selective enforcement, and screwing the athletes for decades.

And...this settlement is going to get litigated in a court of appeals, anyway.

Who set up the collectives IMMEDIATELY when the courts essentially told the NCAA they couldn't stop NIL? The players? The courts?

No, the schools.

Who sued when the NCAA tried to ding UT for recruiting practices with Nico? Did Nico? Did the courts?

No, the state at the bidding of the school.

Who sued to create the multi transfer portal? By Golly, you're right, a couple of players and who jumped right in there with them? The courts?

No, the states including again Tennessee, no doubt nodding to what UT wanted.

C'mon. The courts are just ruling, then the schools are pushing those rulings to the absolute...... you can't regulate this at all..... limits. It's the schools.

Not even.

The schools didn't set up the collectives. The collectives themselves and the boosters did that.

The states took on the NCAA on behalf of the student athletes, not the schools. The schools couldn't legally interfere in that process.

Grant House, et al sued and got the multi transfer time quashed. 17 states AGs joined that suit. Zero schools were involved.

"No doubt". There's plenty of doubt. Plenty of schools fought it tooth and nail. That's the reason the NCAA - and schools - are pushing back with the NIL clause in the proposed House case settlement.

Your last paragraph is confused and indecipherable. It's meaningless.

"The courts are just ruling"???

They are merely interpreting the law. What the schools want isn't relevant because they are a party to any of the pertinent cases.
