I'm confused. Conference champions get automatic bids, but we're an at large team even though we won the SEC. Not a big deal as long as we're in, just wondering about the logic. I guess maybe because the SEC only has four teams total.

Nailed it. There may also be a number of years competing as conference requirement but not sure.

I say that only because it seems to make sense. I learned alot about rowing watching the SEC Championship. I’ve fallen into love with the sport lately.

Tennessee won the 2026 SEC Rowing Championship — its first since 2012 — but did not get an automatic qualification (AQ) to the NCAA Division I Women’s Rowing Championship because the SEC’s new championship format does not meet the NCAA’s AQ threshold row2k.com.

SEC’s New Rowing Championship Format​

In August 2025, the SEC announced a four‑team rowing championship for its members: Alabama, Oklahoma, Tennessee, and Texas row2k.com. This is a significant reduction from the six‑team minimum required for a conference to award an AQ spot to its champion.
Because the SEC’s regatta has only four schools, it cannot offer an automatic bid to the NCAA. All four SEC schools remain eligible to earn at‑large bids individually row2k.com.

NCAA Qualification Rules​

Since 2013, the NCAA D1 Women’s Rowing Championship has been made up of:
  • 11 conference champions (AQ spots)
  • 11 at‑large bids (for top‑ranked non‑conference teams)
    The total field is 22 schools row2k.com.
With only four AQ‑eligible conferences in 2025, the number of AQ spots dropped to 9, and at‑large spots increased to 13 row2k.com. The SEC’s small size means its champion cannot be one of the AQ qualifiers.
