Take Home the Heisman Trophy

First it asks you for your last name. I typed in "Quixy".

Then you are taken to a cutscene with a coach telling you how important your performance will be for recruiting. You get the "Leave it all out on the field" speech similar to the movie Rudy.

Then you choose whether you are a:

Pocket QB
Scrambling QB
Running Back
Wide Receiver
Defensive Lineman
Linebacker
or Defensive Back

Quixy is a scrambling QB.

Now I am taken to the Option Drill which is very similar to Madden 2005's rushing attack, except the QB runs with the ball and can option it.

If you option the ball, the CPU will control the runningback or the fullback with the ball, so it is better as the QB to keep the ball. I tried the option attack on several different difficulties (all-american and heisman) and it doesn't make a difference. The difficulty setting is the same in this mode. I am good at the rushing attack in Maddens so this wasn't much different. You wait for your fullback to pick up a block and then you use him to get in the way of the other defenders. If you time your jukes right and use your players to get in defenders way, you can score almost every possession. I ended up being offered by #2 Tennessee, #5 Florida State, and #13 Florida, or the option to walk-on. I chose FSU.

Now I have the chance for fill in my first name "Tue", home state, hometown, position, number, hand, appearance, equipment (I added a shaded visor), and then it shows you your ratings.

My ratings are:
80 ovr, 84 spd, 56 str, 59 awr, 84 agi, 85 acc, 48 cth, 62 car, 78 jmp, 59 btk, 40 tak, 92 thp, 80 tha, 40 pb, 40 rb, 40 kp, 40 ka, 80 sta, and 80 inj.

Now I am in my dorm room. I can view my awards, view my trophies, play a game, view player/team stats and rankings, view a picture of your girlfriend*, read fan mail*, read your teams newsletter, or improve by viewing your playbook.

Now all trophies and stats are blank, so there is nothing to view yet.
*My girlfriend does not look like pg. 6 cheerleader. She is smiling but has a double chin (no chin?) and wide eyes. The sad thing is that I know girls that look exactly like that picture and it's kind of sad that I am working towards a better looking girlfriend. Don't let your real life girlfriend figure out that you are moving your way up by meeting more attractive girls in the game or she will become self-conscious about her own appearance.
*The fanmail says "Hello Tue, I have heard nothing but good things about you since you arrived on campus. It's good to hear that we have a class act like you around to keep these guys in line. Keep up the good work, and best of luck. From, Ben Blount"

I clicked on the new playbook to try and improve my ability. Bad idea! They give you a fullback and halfback in the option attack drill and you are going against five defensive players! The defensive players are all fast ball hawks and in five possessions, I fumbled twice (trying to pitch the ball) and made it across the line of scrimmage once! I was at -530 points! I believe you attempt the playbook after your player has progressed during the season. As of right now, it is just way too hard and Tue Quixy just isn't fast enough. The difficulty is far different than the initial recruiting drill. Maybe because I am going against college athletes instead of high school players!

Clicking on the Newsletter gives you a picture of #34 and says "Every Game's a Battle, The ACC is looking strong with teams like #5 Florida State."

Time to play the schedule. Bring it #11 Miami!

CONT............

I am wearing all red uniforms as an alternate. They show HB#3 warming up and Corso picks Florida State and puts on their helmet. This game is set on All-American (as it is against Miami), but the next game I will play on Heisman. We are playing in Tallahassee. I have Tue Quixy as my starting QB. He is not rated as high as the other QB's but I believe they put you in the starting lineup regardless.

Time for me to kick off! The very first play, the screen is shaking like crazy! I am hearing the war chant and Miami tried to hot route on the first play and his receivers could not hear. Second play the crowd wasn't so loud. Miami has tried to hot route the far right receiver on every play. They went three and out as they passed for a short gain on first down ran for several yards on second down, and was sacked by RE#95 who is at a +3 overall after two tackles, and 1 sack.

Wow, maybe I am getting too good on All-American difficulty, but after a screen pass for -3 three yards, I ran a HB off tackle out of the shotgun, and HB#3 scored on a 75 yard TD run! Two Miami defenders were pursuing him from the right, and HB#3 managed to juke both of them with one move. After that he was gone. Breakaway speed is what NCAA 2006 is about.

Miami is coming back with a 17 yard run by HB#30 and a 12 yard pass to a diving TE#82. Yikes, on the very next play they hit WR#85 who is down to my 20 yard line! After two incompletions and an 8 yard HB#30 run, Miami settled for a field goal. Score FSU 7, Miami 3.

First play, I tried scrambling with Quixy which was only for a minimal gain. Ran the ball twice with HB#3 for a first down. HB#3 is at a +4 overall and is in the zone. While in the zone, HB#3 ended up being tackled for a loss. Miami's LB#17 ran between the tackle and guard, knocked over my fullback, and tossed HB#3 down before he even had a chance to get going. 2nd and 12. Quixy hit HB#3 on an 11 yard pass, but threw an incomplete pass on 3rd and 1. Out of seven bars, Quixy only has 1 composure bar! Time to punt!

After moderate success on offense, Miami is punting again. At the end of the 1st qtr, Miami QB#3 is 4/7 for 50 yards and HB#30 is 4/30 yards (7.5 avg). TE#82 is 2 for 19 yards, and WR#85 is 1 for 31 yards.

For my team, HB#3 is 4/77 yards (19.2 avg) and 1 TD, Quixy is 2/3 for 8 yards.

After a 42 yard pas by Quixy to WR#5. Quixy gets to cocky and throws an int when trying to throw a 15 yard flag route to WR#5 again. The ball was picked by Miami's CB#31. First down Miami from their own 6.

Just like that, I blitz and get beat on a play action pass to WR#9. The Miami receivers have speed and I was only a half an inch (on my screen) behind him, but I couldn't catch up to him and he scored. 94 yards. That break away speed goes both ways. My fault. Miami 10, FSU 7.

FSU scored. I had a balanced attack down the field. Quixy can pass reasonably well and hit two different tight ends and WR#5 again. I ran the option and had two big runs by HB#5. (might need sliders adjustments for the running game if you are FSU on All-American). Then I capped off the drive with an 8 yard Quixy tuck and ran it in. The run game works better than in years past because the corners follow the receivers down field in man-2-man and don't react the moment the ball is being handed off. Once the corners react, there is enough space to juke them.

FSU 14, Miami 10.

Miami moved the ball fairly well again with their TE#82, but a big sack by my DT ended their momentum. They punted and I have the ball with 42 seconds left in the half.

Well, I went nowhere. Passed the ball for four yards, ran the ball for no gain with HB#28, and was sacked on 3rd down. Miami now has the ball at the 50 with 20 seconds left.

That's the half. DE#92 sacked the QB. FSU tried to run a hurry up and only managed an 6 yard pass to end the half. I've changed the difficulty to Heisman for the second half.

HALFTIME STATS
Miami
QB#3 10/13 164 yards 1 TD, 0 INTs, 208.3 QB rating.
HB#30 4/30 yards 7.5 avg.
TE#82 5/38 yards.
RT#64 1 pancake block.
CB#3 and ROLB#17 have 4 tackles.

FSU
Quixy passing: 8/11 78 yards 1 INT, rushing: 4/19 yards 1 TD (containment hasn't been as good this game as in previous games)
HB#3 7/113 yards 16.1 avg 1 TD
LT#75 and C#63 have 1 pancake
RE#95 and ROLB#54 have 4 tackles
RE#95 and LE#92 each have a sack

Miami 5 first downs, 0-4 on 3rd down, 0 penalties.
FSU 8 first downs, 2-4 on 3rd down, 0 penalties.

I'm receiving!

On heisman, HB#4 tackled for four yard loss, then I was sacked, and then I had to throw an incomplete pass under pressure. I went 3 and out, time to punt. Shanked the punt, because I am not used to Heisman, so Miami has the ball at the 20!

Miami moved the ball down to the three, had first and goal on the three, ran a play action out of goal line, and I got a user pick! Miami moved the ball down to the three on a couple of short passes and then a pass to WR#9.

I had one decent run for 12 yards and nothing after that. Time to punt again.

Shanked it again! Miami ball at the 33. Miami ran the ball a couple of times and then was sacked. 7 yard loss. They are punting on 4th down. Touchback.

I was sacked by OLB#17 on second down and went 3 and out again.

Miami moved the ball on the ground again and ended up in field goal range. Wasn't sure why they passed the ball on 3rd and short, but that's what they did. Then they kicked a field goal on 4th and inches.

FSU 14, Miami 13.

My best drive yet. Quixy began spreading the ball around and moved the ball down to Miami's 35 yard line. I think every receiver in the 4 wide touched the ball on that possession. Then I ran a HB#3 dive and bounced it to the outside for a 35 yard TD run. Finally, HB#3 beats the heisman difficulty.

FSU 21, Miami 13.

Start of the 4th qtr. Miami struggled in running the football, but managed to throw the ball to TE#82 across the middle on several occasions. Miami ended up going for it on 4th and 8 on my 37 yard line and I broke up the pass.

I had another great passing drive and managed to get to the 20, but since I cannot kick worth beans on Heisman, I missed the field goal.

Well, Miami drove halfway down the field and with 36 seconds left threw a pick. FSU's CB#13 stepped in front and took it to the house on a 68 yard INT return.

FSU 28, Miami 13.

Final: FSU 28, Miami 13.
Miami
QB#3 19/33 300 yards 1 TD, 2 INTs
HB#30 11/64 yards
TE#82 8/70 yards
WR#85 4/89 yards
RT#64 4 pancakes
DT#92, CB#4, and ROLB#17 6 tackles each

FSU
Quixy passing: 12/18 159 yards 1 INT, rushing: 7/2 yards 1 TD
HB#3 15/170 11.3 avg 2 TDs
WR#26 3/56 yards
Oline 2 pancakes total
RE#95 8 tackles, 2 sacks
ROLB#54 5 tackles
