The NCAA is considering letting college football staffs add a 10th assistant coach. You have to wonder if Butch adds a QB coach to this staff if this passed the NCAA.

"Changes to the recruiting calendar to accommodate earlier National Letter of Intent signing periods are one of the four areas of focus in the proposed Division I football recruiting model. Increasing the limit on the number of assistant coaches in the Football Bowl Subdivision from nine to 10 is another."

"FBS programs can have a maximum of 85 players who receive grants-in-aid. Additionally, most programs have walk-on players. The Football Oversight Committee felt the addition of another coaching staff member will benefit football players."

“There was unanimity around the table on the addition of a 10th assistant coach being allowed (in FBS),” Bowlsby said. “We feel it is appropriate from a student-athlete welfare standpoint. The ratio of coaches to student-athlete is much higher in football than other sports, and this helps address that.”

Would be great to have a top notch QB coach on staff.

Does anybody know the true staff number at AL? I had the impression they just add orphan coaches at will.

I'd guess a lot of schools would just add a special teams coach instead of that responsibility falling on a position coach.

This is widely expected to pass in April and take effect in the 2017/2018 season. Given the turnover to (almost certainly) come in Jones' staff, I would think it has to factor into his hiring plan.

If we add a 10th assistant, I wonder if it's more likely that he'll be a position coach or someone whose main focus is on recruiting, as suggested in this piece:

In short, the typical FBS coaching staff isn’t hurting for bodies on the field, but they are in recruiting. A 10th assistant focused primarily on recruiting would be especially crucial during the season, when the existing nine assistants are focused on game-planning, practice, film study and winning games on Saturdays. An extra assistant could spend more focused, quality time on the road during the season, and generally treat the fall recruiting period like the rest of the staff does the winter and spring.

That’s how we think most would use a 10th assistant if and when the new legislation becomes official.
