SI.com - Writers - Stewart Mandel: Real-time bubble watch - Saturday March 10, 2007 12:16AM.

RealTimeRPI.com Men's College Basketball Rating Percentage Index (RPI) Ratings - A leading sports ratings and resources community on the Internet

bubble teams out of the tournament and their RPI:
29 Air Force
34 Oklahoma St
36 Purdue
37 Missouri St
39 Arkansas

bubble teams in the tournament and their RPI:
42 Texas Tech
46 Notre Dame
49 Vanderbilt
54 Virginia
68 Standford

He considered Notre Dame, Virginia, and Vandy as locks.
Mandel's bubble teams make no sense now.

For weeks Vandy was a lock for the tournament.
Their RPI is now 49. For comparison, Alabama has a 47, and Arkansas a 39.

In this case you're making too much of RPI.

Missouri St. lost in the first round of their conference tourney and has dropped a few of its last games. Oklahoma St. has been tremendously awful on the road all year and has some pretty bad losses. Air Force is 5-5 in its last 10 games, including a loss to 15-15 TCU at home, and Wyoming in their tournament. Arkansas just doesnt have any big wins all year, except for Vandy twice.

Meanwhile, TTU has beaten TXAM twice, Ok St.., KSU, and Texas. ND has beaten Bama, Marquette, Pitt, and they have an 11-6 (including tournament) record in maybe the deepest conference in the country. Vandy was solid in the SEC- we know what they've done and haven't done. And Stanford probably isn't a lock, and should be with the first group of teams.

There has never been a team with an RPI under 40 who didnt make the tournament. Those are real time RPI's updated last night.

You make some good points with regard to teams. But Air Force with a 29 RPI and Oklahoma St with a 34 RPI are locks. If Arkansas beats Miss St they are in instead of Vandy. Missouri St is borderline. Texas Tech in.

Most bubble teams with an RPI under 40 are in IMO. I'm losing a lot of respect for Mandel. For example Stanford probably has no chance. He considers them in.

Vandy is in IMO.The real question is will Vandy or Tennessee get pass the first round.

If Missouri State or Arkansas make the field, it will prove this is the worst NCAA field of all time.

It appears Mandel doesnt use the RPI ratings but goes by gut feel. Apparently he's been eating a lot of mexican.

There is nothing more overrated by fans than the RPI. Ask Missouri State how much their RPI helped them last year. Computer geeks aren't going to save dreck like Arkansas.

There has never been a team with an RPI under 40 who didn't make the tournament. The RPI is a good factor to determine if a team maks the tournament. Under 40 they are most likely in.

Its obvious the selection team uses it, thats the best explanation as to why UT got a 2 seed last year.

if Ole Miss could pull out a huge upset today, I think they have a chance to get in...although winning the whole thing is the only way for them to get a lock

Keep believing that the committee has ceded their responsibilities to the technogeeks. You're in for a rude awakening at 6 tomorrow night.

CARMEL, Ind. (AP) --
The Rating Percentage Index (RPI) has been used by the NCAA since 1981 to supplement the selection of at-large teams and the seeding of all teams for the NCAA basketball tournament.

The key word there being "supplement." There will be multiple teams with sub 40 RPIs left out of the field.

It hasn't ever happened before.

I think this is more accurate:

Bubble Teams in and their RPI
29 Air Force
34 Oklahoma St
36 Purdue
39 Arkansas
42 Texas Tech

bubble teams out and their RPI:
37 Missouri St
46 Notre Dame
49 Vanderbilt
54 Virginia
68 Standford

If Arkansas or Air Force gets in ahead of Virginia, the tournament should be cancelled immediately.
