Edit: New release date is 11/18/08.

Instead of "March Madness" as it's been called, it is now "NCAA Basketball".

This will be the only College Basketball game this year. Knowing that, they have spent alot of time trying to make this game better than the College Hoops 2K series.

Following up on the success of the NCAA March Madness franchise, NCAA Basketball 09 is not just a new name -- it introduces a new way to play college basketball that mirrors real life. A new, strategic gameplay feature challenges gamers to replicate their school’s style of play, set the tempo and win. Whether your school plays up tempo looking to push the ball in transition, runs a half-court offense that utilizes the clock and limits possessions or features a balanced attack that combines transition offense with set plays, NCAA Basketball 09 rewards the strategic gamer and emphasizes team specific styles of play. The game features Division I coaches in-game for the first time. Each coach will provide real time instruction and feedback, helping gamers control the tempo by executing their team’s offense and defense to perfection.

This year on Xbox 360 and PLAYSTATION 3, NCAA Basketball 09 will operate on a new gameplay engine with over 1,000 new animation sequences that deliver a more responsive experience with improved ball physics and more intelligent AI. The new animation system enables gamers to apply pressure defense with new full-court presses and traps. Plus, improved AI and animations enable quicker players to get up and down the floor faster and make better decisions running the lanes and driving to the rim. Animations can be interrupted at any time, enabling you to read and respond to the action on the floor, just like real life.

The community leaders who went to EA's feedback event said that this game is actually fun to play. Most of them are 2K fans, but said gameplay has improved a ton. CDJ from ncaaStrategies probably had the best writeups out of all the reviewers, so I recommend reading those for the early impriessions. Here's my thread full of links to more info if anyone wants to read those:

EA Forums: NCAA Basketball 09 News Feed

Also, the first gameplay trailer is coming out sometime this week.

After reading all the impressions myself, it sounds like the gameplay is going to be much improved and better than Live 09, but it will lack some core features that would attract casual gamers.

1. Great playing game (according to reviewers)

But...

1. No online roster names
2. No exported draft classes
3. No Online Team Play mode
4. No Campus Legend mode

I can do without all of those things and still have a lot of fun with a college basketball game. Hopefully, the upcoming gameplay videos will live up to the community leaders' reviews. I think EA is holding back a lot of Dynasty Mode info right now too.

Renaldo Woolridge and Scotty Hopson

For people who will still prefer 2K basketball, there are several roster projects going on at the Operation Sports forums to update CH 2K8 with 2008-09 rosters. I'm not sure if any of those will get finished, but keep an eye out for those, especially if you don't enjoy this game when it comes out.

The pic of Hopson leg looks horrible and the pic of the gator in Wollridge also looks bad. Once again EA owns the franchise with no comp and it will blow like all ea bs.

Judging a game by two low-res screenshots is a bit ridiculous in my opinion. College Hoops has been the overall better series in the past, but March Madness did a lot of things right. EA's development team has taken a bunch of feedback from forum wishlists and gamers' impressions, and improved NCAA 09 with it. They have this series on the right track, and I have to give them credit for that.

EA basketball plays different from 2K games, and College Hoops fans probably will notice things that aren't up to par yet. However, NCAA 09 will do some things better than CH 2K8, and it will be worth a rent (and maybe a purchase) for gamers who love college basketball.

I am really surprised since they did it online roster sharing with NCAA football this year. I would think they would use the EA Locker since everyother EA Sports title this year uses it.

What is being said is you can't have roster names online. You can download the roster via the EA Locker & use them offline. I'm not sure why you can't use the rosters online though.

Correct. Names won't show up under the players when you are playing online mode games.

EA's college basketball series has had the EA Locker since March Madness 07.

Since this will be the only college bball game this year, we will have to play it. But I cant believe that names wont be used online and why the 5v5 mode will not be used is really dropping the ball. The success that NHL has had with this mode is overwhelming and is a huge thing that will not be included in this game imho.

The dev team spent most of their time fixing gameplay issues, and that is why there's no new game modes. They felt that if gameplay wasn't fun, new game modes wouldn't be fun either, and I agree with them. I was really hoping for OTP mode online too though, and the no online names thing was a priority mistake. Those should definitely have been added in.

No demo release date has been announced.

When is the release date?
Dec. 2nd or Dec. 4th. I've seen both dates.

One of the NCAA Basketball producers is over at OS taking questions.

Q. How's the atmosphere compared to Live 2009 as far as the crowd?

A.
  • NCAA has student sections with unique student section placement by venue. The student sections also have unique animations and coloring
  • We have our own crowd models
  • We have 300+ crowd chants that have the animation synced to the audio
  • We have bands with unique placement by venue
  • We have crowd members with props.
  • The atmosphere has a higher intensity than that of an NBA game
  • Crowd/environment lighting is brighter to better showcase the atmosphere
  • Varying types of crowd audio depending on venue size. So if you’re playing in the Carrier Dome it sounds much different than it does at Cameron indoor.
  • Variable attendance, band and number of cheerleaders depending on school pride. We also don’t have commentary at schools with low school pride. You can build up your school pride as per real life.
  • Home and away crowds for tournament games.
