Has anybody heard who will be on the cover of NCAA 09? I know it won't happen, but it would be sweet to see a Tennessee guy on there for once.

With EA already teasing the cover announcement, it is time to look over the top candidates to grace the cover of NCAA Football 09. Historically EA has gone for the most popular and dynamic player entering the draft. The are a couple exceptions though such as when they went retro with Desmond Howard in 06 and chose Jared Zabransky for 08 based less off the success of him as an individual and more on the overall excitement around the Boise State team. The cover also generally goes to an offensive player as the only defensive player to ever get it was Charles Woodson in 1999. The breakdown for the series has been six QBs, three RBs, one WR, and one CB. This year there are two good defensive candidates, with one in particular having the name recognition that could make a difference. There is the obvious player who everyone would expect to get the cover. There are some sleepers that could be in the running if they declare for the draft. And there are also a handful of QBs and those would have to be considered since the NCAA Football series has slanted towards them in the past. Top Contendersmcfadden1.jpg Darren McFadden, RB, Arkansas: It would come as no surprise to anyone if McFadden was announced as the cover athlete. He is a natural fit. The most recognizable name in the draft even though he didn’t win the Heisman. Great potential to have a big impact in the mold of Adrian Peterson in his rookie season in the NFL. clong1.jpgAlmost seems too perfect for the cover. Chris Long, DE, Virginia: As stated earlier defensive players don’t get much consideration when it comes to the cover. However the difference here is in the name. Chris Long is the son of former Raiders great and current Fox studio analyst Howie Long. He is expected to go at the top of the draft and could potentially even be the first pick. QBsmattryan1.jpgMatt Ryan, Boston College: With the success of the Red Sox, Patriots, Celtics, and Boston College would it really be a surprise to see Ryan on the cover? He led BC to some great late-game comebacks and started to get his name mentioned throughout the country when they were in the national title hunt.ddixon1.jpg Dennis Dixon, Oregon: An exciting dynamic player that may have won the Heisman and led his team to a National Championship had he not gotten injured late in the season. He was riding a wave of momentum prior to that and his name is known on a national stage because of that. Brian Brohm, Louisville: Went into the year expecting to be the top pick or at least top QB taken going into the draft but may not end up even being that. Louisville had a bad season though mostly based on their atrocious defense. cbrennan1.jpgColt Brennan, Hawaii: Last year it was Zabransky after helping underdog Boise State to an undefeated season and amazing Fiesta Bowl win that got him the cover. This year Colt Brennan is in the same situation heading into the Sugar Bowl only he has far better numbers and is a better pro prospect. Andre Woodson, Kentucky: Another top quality QB that is expected to go early in the draft possibly in the top 10. RBsJonathan Stewart, Oregon: An underclassman that if he declares (which most seem to expect he will) almost certainly will be the next back taken after McFadden. If they don’t go McFadden they probably won’t go RB and Stewart isn’t as recognizable as teammate Dixon. Mike Hart, Michigan: After the disappointing season they had Hart probably won’t get much consideration. But he is the top senior RB so his name should be out there. Felix Jones, Arkansas: A fantastic back that was overshadowed by McFadden. For that reason alone he has no shot of getting the cover as everyone would assume that it was McFadden anyway. Unless that was what EA had in mind. Clever idea actually. WRsDeSean Jackson, California: The receiver group for this year doesn’t really provide much hope for grabbing the cover. Of them Jackson appears to be the best fit due to the excitement he brings to the field. DefenseGlenn Dorsey, DT, LSU: At this point Dorsey seems to be the name mentioned the most as going first in the draft. For that reason alone his name deserves to be out there when talking about the cover, but the chances of him being put on are minimal. Outside of hardcore football fans no one would recognize him.

They will never put a UT player on the cover. Ever.

If I had to guess, I'd say either John David Booty or Colt Brennan. Maybe a slight chance it's Dorsey.

They normally go with the off pick guy like Zebransky. I'd guess Brennan. I highly doubt Dorsey. You will not see Erik Ainge or any other Vol on there. I can assure you of that.

Not really... Other than when they tried that Desmond Howard cover, the players were all Heisman contenders. I think McFadden gets it.

Exactly. Zebransky was a change from the norm. Even DH was a Heisman winner in his day.

They usually go with whoever best personifies one of their new gimmicky features.

Desmond Howard - NCAA 06 - Race for the Heisman
Reggie Bush - NCAA 07 - Impact Players
Jared Zabransky - NCAA 08 - Trick Plays

Here's a pic of the silhouetted cover. It's possible that it's just generic, but if not, I bet McFadden is the coverboy.

Good point. If anyone can find out what new feature they are trying to introduce it would likely narrow it down a bit.

this is just my opinion, but here are a few guys and why they will or won't be on the cover.

McFadden: I think they will go in a different direction since they went with the dynamic "already a superstar" running back with Reggie in 07. If it had been a few years since Bush was the NCAA hype-man, it would be McFadden all the way. He still has a slight shot though, and I wouldn't rule out a double cover with him and Jones, since they were the most talked about running back tandem and should both be first rounders.

Brennan: He has a slight shot, imo. Hawaii getting raped in the Sugar Bowl and his sub-par performances in that game and the senior bowl should lose most of the hype surrounding him. Plus, they went with the feel good story last year, and that story had a much better ending. So I think he is out, but still wouldn't be utterly shocked if he somehow landed it.

DeSean Jackson: Going into the season, he had some hype, and would be something different from the past couple of years. His lackluster season ruined any chance of gracing the cover, though.

Booty: I don't think he is a serious contender. He was just a piece of the USC Juggernaut, and this season was unspectacular by USC's standards.

Chris Long: Tony's giant post mentioned he was the premiere name as far as defensive players are concerned, but Dorsey has gotten more media love and hype. Long played for a decent Virginia team, while Dorsey is the probable #1 pick in the draft and the hyped up defensive stud for the national champions. LSU>Virginia puts Long out of serious consideration.

And now my few guesses at the cover boy:

Dorsey: Mentioned most of his pros above, and after the NC and the draft, people will forget about his injuries during the season and he will get a lot of consideration. Being the best defensive player on the NC team without any huge superstars on offense boosts his stock a lot. I think he finishes 2nd in the running.

Matt Ryan: He is my pick if they go with an offensive guy, which they usually do. All of the New England love gives him a good shot at the cover. Just about every media guy I have heard talk about him has made a comment about how great he is and how much they love to see BC being a good team again. My guess is it will be an all NE cover year, with Ryan on NCAA and Brady on Madden.

Dark Horse:

Andre Woodson: He could get a push since he is being credited as the guy who single handedly made Kentucky a formidable football team. I think people will overlook the fact that KY had several other big pieces on that team that helped them achieve their successes this season. His high draft stock and talk about his "raw talent" should give him a slight chance as well. The major drawbacks I see are too many losses, a close win against a diminished Florida State team, and the fact that he plays at Kentucky. Being the QB for Kentucky could be good or bad, it just depends on how the decision makers look at it.

And like someone else said, it probably will come down to what gimmick they try to pump up this year, so there is a good chance my reasoning means even less than it already does.

Sorry for the really long post, I was bored and once I started typing, I couldn't stop...

actually, after looking at the 08 cover again, Zabransky is in a totally different pose than what is on the silhouette cover. Plus the QB shadow is left handed, and Zabransky is right. But it could lean towards a certain position, and from the pic you would assume running back, and the only running back it could be is McFadden.

F it, my head is starting to hurt, I'm going to bed :snoring:

Does EA Sports now hate us like ESPN, SI and all other media entities?

I think it will be Mcfadden because there will not be alot of changes to the game. We all know how EA sports is if they make a great game they want spend alot of time making in new things for a couple of years. They need to spend some time on Madden because it is garbage right now.
