NC State to hire Justin Gainey as its next head coach

Question is: What players will follow him? Also what portal players Tennessee has been recruiting will he go after. Just a thought. I am not criticizing him for doing that. If I were leaving that is the first place I would look.
I think he might take more than we think. NCST has 7 players leaving. 4 of them guards, 2 are Forwards, and 1 is a Center. I wouldn't be suprised if Jalen Carey, Boswell, and Henderson go.

Congratulations Coach and best wishes for your success at your new Coaching position. Except of course when you run into the Big Orange :)

He may take 1-2. I could see someone Barnes didn’t want to go to State or an unhappy player.

I’ll throw one more name- JP Estrella - I’m speculating but JP loved playing for Gainey.

Bittersweet for sure - hate seeing Gainey leave as he's been a great recruiter, solid fundamental teacher of the defense, and well liked by all the players.
Glad he's getting a shot at a big time job though - go and do great things coach !!!

I really, really do hope it turns out for him as the toughest thing anyone can do is go coach at there alma mater.
unless you are set up for success like a J. Shoyer at Duke, it usually doesn't go well in the long run.
I can't think of very many, if any outside of that one example, where a returning alum coached the school to a high level of success...I mean there's Pope at UK, but the jury is still out there.

I wouldn't disagree about the love for Gainey, but I think JP and Cade have made TN their home and will be the only TRUE veterans with this program next year. They came together along with Carr, Knecht and Gainey. They were that last of last to see 3-4 year guys in the program. (Ziegler, Mashack). Boswell is the one that probably feels out of place and will want to transfer or whatever. Boswell was a freshman along with 4 transfers.

You think Gainey is going to knife Barnes in the back like that?
They are friends. They will be professional and the players will decide. If English comes back are there any players he might bring? I have heard some names mentioned, but I don’t know if they were guys that played for English. Tennessee will be ok. Barnes is the master, Gainey is the protege. Barnes has taught Gainey everything Gainey knows, but he hasn’t taught him everything he knows.

Kind of suprising he gets his first shot as HC for a P5 school. I wish him well, but will be a hard job to fill the expectations that Wade created there before hoping back. Maybe similar to following up Kiffin here when he darted after 1 yr.

Their situation was to get someone who is the exact opposite of will wade - an honorable person of high character and principles who would have loyalty to their program.

A dream job for Justin. Very happy for him. Competing against Duke and UNC in your own neighborhood however isn’t easy.

Some of my earliest memories of watching college basketball were during those David Thompson years and have always liked the Wolfpack.
I was there at that time

Or that these guys that were here making major contributions on an elite 8 team with a hall of fame coach want to pack it up and go to Raleigh with a rookie? Ain’t happening.

I wish him well. NC State is a tough place to succeed in basketball with Duke and UNC sucking up all the oxygen. Maybe Gainey can keep it together long enough to see the ACC collapse. When that happens, no way all 3 schools will move to the same conference.

It's like Barnes said at the tournament. All that matters in recruiting is money. It's a quick conversation. What's your number? He said it's easier then the past. So they might go if State will pay more

Sounds good to me. Need to upgrade those spots if we want to get to a final 4.

I wouldn’t sell Gainey short. He knew a whole lot before he came to UT.

I didn’t know he was an alum so this is great opportunity for him. Even if not, I’m sure NC State wouldn’t hire a coach right now without gaurantees that he would stay a minimum amount of time after going through that Will Wade fiasco.

With Wade there I can now hate on both their football and basketball teams again.
On same level as turd-LSwho. Will do anything to win.
