I got attacked for pointing out the truth a week ago, maybe its clear now? Are they still a top 25 defense?

I really dunno what's worse.

That NC St is our "big win" so far this season.

O

The fact that we almost hired their coach in the Schiano Sunday aftermath. Would have been further purgatory for our program. Doreen would have been small step above Botch. Not good enough to get us anywhere and just good enough that we would not have fired him-a perennial 7-5 or on a good year 8-4 type program. Depressing to even think about as we look at our ranking and expectations now

I think Doeren is a good football coach. 7 seasons at NCSt with 8+ wins means he is what I call a 'real coach'. He has made them a much better team than their baseline.
I agree with your assessment of him as HC at UT. Good is not good enough.

I don't know that he's made them better than their baseline. I think NC State's baseline is a 8-4/7-5 type of team. That's exactly what they've been under Doeren most of the time.

They are the most weirdly consistent slightly-above-average program in college football.

They've had 26 7+win seasons in 40 years; pretty good overall.
North Carolina State Wolfpack School History
Doeren has had 9 of them in 11 seasons. He is a bit above their average.
They had 6 7+wins in the 11 seasons prior to his hire. He is better than their usual HC.

Only reason I know is I was reading their school history when reading the NCState collapse posts.

On a win % basis, he is slightly better than average, but only slightly.

Dick Sheridan 59-29-3 (.637)
Mike O'Cain 41-40 (.506)
Chuck Amato: 49-37 (.570)
Tom O'Brien 40-35 (.533)
Dave Doeren 83-60 (.580)

Total 232-201-3 (.536)

It's a weirdly consistent program at being slightly above-average.

The craziest facts to me:: they've only had 1 10+ win season in the past 45 years (didn't look back further than that). They've not had a single season where they've finished in the top 10.

It's actually shocking to me how they've been reasonably good for most of the past 40'ish years, but never great and rarely bad. They just consistently hover around that 5-9 win area. Can't think of any other program with that profile.

I found this to be an interesting take on NCSUs issues this season. Basically questions bringing in as many transfers especially at QB

Interesting. I watched the NCST spring game on ACC network, and those talking heads said then, that looking ahead to the early game vs. UT, State would have the best QB on the field. I just smiled and shook my head. 😁
