'21 NC RB Jaylen Wright (Tennessee signee)

Look, I’ll be pulling for the kid during his career, but that’s not what a 4.28 40 looks like. There are several reasons that so many kids supposedly run 4.2 to 4.4 40 yard times in high school, yet then run 4.45 to 4.7 times at the NFL combine. One reason is that hand timing is notoriously inaccurate. Another is that the guy doing the hand timing has a vested interest in the kid (e.g., he is pulling for the kid and wants him to do well). Another is that these times are self reported by the kids themselves. No such issues exist at the NFL combine, and almost everybody runs slower than they have always been reported to run. There are very, very few legitimate sub 4.3 guys. This kid isn’t one of them. Feel free to bookmark this post, and we can discuss it again in several years if Wright goes to the NFL combine.

He's 10.5
100 meter kid.

So yes, he very well could be 4.3 or 4.2 now or someday. You can't tell jack from a video.

You can see Usain Bolt smoke eveybody in a race and celebrate but you won't know how fast it is until the the time is on the screen.

Kid didn't look slow at all in the video...

Fans like that is why our fan base gets made fan of. Smh. GET OVER YOURSELF, you sound like UGA
I'm not sure if this is supposed to be directed at me or not but if you are truly honest with yourself. And you watch that video it does not look sub 4.3... Sub 4.6 maybe... but not sub 4.3. Wasn't Meaning it as he is a slow player only meant it as that's a slow looking 4.28.

Wright has a faster 55 meter time than Notre Dame RB Chris Tyree who ran a 4.37 40 at the opening in 2019. It seems weird to argue tenths of a second over an online video. There is no question that Wright can move.

I agree. That was nowhere close to a legitimate 4.28. Hand-timed sprints are horribly unreliable.
Threw it into VLC with a time encode and, being quite generous, the fastest I got was 4.39. Being...unbiased...it came out to 4.45. If either is accurate to laser timing, that is incredibly fast. We see every NFL combine how much lower "real" 40 times are to reported ones.

*When I hand timed it, I got 4.30 averaging a couple runs.

I will say just watching, he's a definite burner once he gets off the line 2-3 steps. I'd bet his rolling 40 is even stronger. Could make for a great out of the backfield catcher and jet sweep guy I'd say.

You only knew he was fast in comparison to his competition. Anyone who claims to be able to judge speed by watching a video is lying or deluded and trying to impress someone who has already judged him as a fool

This looks like fun I want to play too -

Speed is relative -

The 40 yard dash doesn’t exactly tell you how fast a guy is. I mean, yeah, it tells you how fast he can run 40 yards but there are a number of variables involved. Running on grass or turf isn’t exactly the same as running on a high tech track. The most important aspect to me of the 40 yard dash is it is more like a measure of acceleration. There are 36.576 meters in 40 yards and that’s just around the distance it normally takes a sprinter to reach top speed. The chart below is a German analysis of Usain Bolt’s world record time in the 100 meters. The record time was 9.58 seconds but later that year Bolt ran a 150 meter sprint so he had a running start for the back 100 meters and he clocked 8.70 seconds for that back 100.

In terms of meters/second just looking at Wright’s 55m, 60m, and 100m times, he’s getting faster the farther he runs on a meters/second basis, which is what you would expect.

I created curves to compare Evan Berry’s 2013 Class 5A Ga state championship time (10.54) to Wright’s personal best as listed on Athletic.net (10.85), his outdoor time from last year, to Anthony Schwartz, junior WR at Auburn (10.07), who claims to be the fastest guy in college football, to Ty Chandler's school record at Montgomery Bell Academy (10.83), to Jalin Hyatt’s best time on Athletic.net (10.46), to Usain Bolt’s world record time (9.58) all for the same distance of 100 meters. I have no way of accounting for track differences or any other variable.

I should note that it’s my understanding that Bolt wasn’t considered the best accelerator but when he got up to speed he was going to blow your doors off. Anyway, I used the same relative acceleration rate for the other guys as I had for Bolt so I could create the curves. Obviously this is flawed because the analysis done for the Germans suggests Bolt’s 40 time would be 4.34 seconds and Jalin Hyatt was clocked at 4.31 in the 40 at the opening regional in 2018. To the best of my knowledge right now, Jalin Hyatt is the fastest guy on our team and, you can quote me on this, he very well likely would have beat Usain Bolt in a 40 yard race when Bolt was in his prime. Of course Bolt would have slaughtered him in a longer race but so what? Around here it's all about the 40.. jmo.

My conclusion is that once he gets up to speed Jaylen Wright is probably about the same speed as Ty Chandler and Jalin Hyatt is perhaps a bit faster than Evan Berry. jmo.

None of this answers the question of exactly what is Jaylen's 40 time but in a head to head matchup my money is on Jalin. jmo.

Edit to add: For every one of these guys, once they get past the first 40 yards, they're running the next 40 yards in sub 4 seconds.

One more edit to add another chart:

He literally said it was hand timed.... lol (meaning obviously not laser.... meaning probably not completely accurate.)

Also, while laser times are accurate the clock starts on any forward movement so it’s also not completely fair especially for someone who doesn’t train running out of the 40 stance a lot.

What you should look at is when this kid hit his second gear. Which he did at roughly 10 yds.

I.e. meaning he’s fast as hell, in lay terms. I get so tired of snotty fans that act like combine experts and always have something negative to say about one of our kids. But if it’s someone committed to Georgia, Bama, or Auburn, buddy you just better pencil them right on in for a heisman hopeful or all American. 🙄
