He’s a 6-foot-0, 165-pound three-star North Carolina cornerback in the Class of 2021 who likes to play physical at the line of scrimmage. “I like to get up in receiver’s faces and get a couple of jabs on them. I have to annoy them a little bit,” Brown said. “I definitely prefer man coverage over zone.” The Jacksonville High School standout was on campus recently taking in Tennessee’s 41-21 over South Carolina. The Gamecocks, along with Tennessee, are one of at least 10 programs who have offered the defensive back. “It was pretty neat seeing two schools who both want me playing each other. I just sat there and watched the different techniques used by the cornerbacks throughout the game for both Tennessee and South Carolina.” Both Jeremy Pruitt and Will Muschamp are defensive-minded head coaches, and both see a need in the secondary that Brown could fill in the future. “I can make plays and I’m ready to work for everything. I’m just trying to be a dog on the field chasing the ball.” If Brown were to choose Tennessee, his position coach would be the head man. Defensive coordinator Derrick Ansley coaches the secondary as a whole, but specifically works with the safeties and nickelbacks during practice throughout the week.
The prospect said he wouldn’t be phased knowing the head coach would be watching his every move. Rather, Brown said it’s about improving and taking coaching from whoever instructs him at the next level. “I know what I have to do when I get to the next level. I must perform well no matter who is watching or teaching. So, that wouldn’t really get to me if I came to Tennessee.” The Tennessee coaching staff likes the way Brown plays on the field. Ansley and Pruitt also like the fact that he’s already 6-foot-0 with more room to grow. Cornerbacks Alontae Taylor and Warren Burrell stand in at 6-foot-0 now while Bryce Thompson and Kenneth George Jr. are 5-foot-11. Other programs around the nation admire Brown’s intangibles as well. Aside from Tennessee and South Carolina, the ACC has been active in the recruiting process with Wake Forrest, Virginia Tech, North Carolina State and North Carolina having offered. Representatives from the Group of Five’s include Appalachian State, East Carolina, Charlotte and Coastal Carolina. “My family and I are just soaking in this recruiting process. I’m not trying to put a lot of pressure on myself. I’m just taking it day-by-day, but these school are always on my phone asking me questions and what not.” Brown has been a busy man this season taking trip after trip each weekend to visit different campuses around the country, but Tennessee stood out. The high school junior was high on the facilities and the game day atmosphere that filled campus and Neyland Stadium.
During the offseason and over the next year, Brown plans to make another trip to Tennessee to tour the campus and see more of what Tennessee has to offer. It’s still early on for 2021 prospect. The offers are beginning to pile up and the recruiting visits are frequent. More programs will jump onboard over the next year but, as is the case for many prospects around the country, Tennessee is appealing to Brown because of the aggressive play-style Pruitt coaches the secondary with the opportunity to make an early impact. “There’s not too many times a cornerback gets to sack the quarterback or blitz from the outside. That’s a good opportunity. I like the way they play the young guys. It shows me they only care about putting the best people on the field to give the team a chance to win.” Tennessee’s slow start didn’t alter his mindset on the program either. “A young team can make a couple of mistakes that can affect the game. That’s what happened. They’ve fixed the little things. This team has grown a lot since week one.” Brown has a busy next few months ahead with still another football season to play before signing on with a college program, but the prospect is planning on announcing his commitment next summer or in August.
