NBA Offseason

It is not going to scare the big dollar teams they are going to do it either way.

The knicks could trade two guys with small contracts and sign lin and get in under the cap. It really is not that hard to do.

Sure thing.

Every other team is operating under the same parameters.

It doesn't get any bigger than NY and they balked at the idea if paying one player damn near 40 million a year.

It's not as easy as you make it seem.

Yes it is. The only reason it seems like it is hard is because Lin is not a proven commodity. Yes he was lightning in a bottle last year, but he only played a third of the season.

Now if the Knicks had Chris Paul in the same situation that sent them over the cap, they would sign him in a heartbeat and pay the penalties.

It really just depends on what the owners want to put out as a product. Do you want to pocket less money as an owner and have a great shot at winning or do you want to put out a terrible product and maybe pocket about the same amount of cash.

When you have a great product more people are going to be in the stands so I am going to go with that.

Moving players will become harder to do. Some just can't grasp it. This luxury tax is going to scare the Hell out of owners.

Enough so that the Knicks ( biggest market ) are afraid to sign a walking dollar sign to a 4 year deal because the luxury tax would have been astronomical just for him alone.

No player is worth up to 40 million a year.

I think it's an excuse. I think Lin's out because either Anthony or Woodson (who doesn't like young PGs, at least based on what he did here in Atlanta) doesn't want him back. Or both of them.

It's impossible to evaluate Lin's contract without thinking about all the jerseys you're going to sell in China too. He's cheap in year one, cheap in year two, and then overpaid + a luxury tax in year three.....so what? He's also an expiring contract at that point, which you can always find another team to take if he's not worth it. I don't know how the luxury tax works if you trade away an expiring contract, but even if the Knicks had to take a hit on it, they will probably have sold enough merchandise the previous two years to make it a wash.

I think the Knicks have decided he's a bad fit for them. Anthony's a ball stopper; Woodson loves isolation. Lin doesnt fit in that. So they're trying to use the media to convince their fans that it's a stupid contract and the Knicks are actually smart for turning it down, because otherwise their fans will freak out.

Or it could be that Dolan's a moron.

Bottom line, the Knicks could've made the money work for 2 years if they really wanted to keep him & then used the stretch provision to keep from getting killed by the luxury tax in year 3. There are some hurt feelings behind the scenes and that's probably the biggest factor behind not matching. It was all good before the restructured poison pill deal. I don't know if that's the root of it but something CLEARLY rubbed Dolan the wrong way.

Melo & JR didn't help the situation by yapping, but if I had to bet money, I'd say that Lin's not a Knick because Dolan doesn't want him there for some reason.
