Nice post. Good story... one problem... the D that they say is needed to win a championship, the Vols don't have!

I don't think it's as easy as putting it all on the defense. I think a good balance is needed (as well as some luck). As good as the Ohio State defense in '02 was being touted, they still gave up 320.9 ypg, but there anemic offense averaged only 364.5 ypg. The Vols current offense of 503.7 ypg ranks up with '95 & '97 Nebraska teams, and '96 Florida.

YEAR / TEAM / TOTAL DEFENSE / TOTAL OFFENSE / DIFFERENCE
1994 Nebraska - 258.8 ypg / 477.8 ypg / 219.0
1995 Nebraska - 294.1 ypg / 556.3 ypg / 262.2
1996 Florida - 281.1 ypg / 503.9 ypg / 222.8
1997 Michigan - 206.9 ypg / 388.0 ypg / 181.1
1997 Nebraska - 257.3 ypg / 513.7 ypg / 256.4
1998 Tennessee - 303.0 ypg / 398.8 ypg / 95.8
1999 Florida St - 304.6 ypg / 425.7 ypg / 121.1
2000 Oklahoma - 278.9 ypg / 429.3 ypg / 150.4
2001 Miami - 270.9 ypg / 454.8 ypg / 183.9
2002 Ohio St - 320.9 ypg / 364.5 ypg / 43.6
2003 USC - 336.4 ypg / 447.5 ypg / 111.1
2003 LSU - 252.0 ypg / 418.4 ypg / 166.4

2004 Tennessee - 363.3 ypg / 503.7 ypg / 140.4

with our championship it was the defense that kept us in a position to win, and our defense this year needs to tighten up, especially in the next 2 weeks, also another good point from the article was the importance of the o-line, games r won in the trenches and this years o-line looks awesome 2 me (my :twocents: )
